I am brand new into Recording but I have been playing guitar for about 2 Years. I am 14 and have:

Sonar LE
Line 6 Pod 2.0
Emu 04004 PCI interface

My setup is my guitar into the Pod into the E-Mu Soundcard. I dont know if this is a good setup because I hear some Clicks in the recording.

I'm going to be getting some more money soon so I would like to know what would be the next thing to buy.

Since i have guitar and Using my Friends Bass, I need to know what the best way to make a good Drum Track, I play them but I dont want to get into recording them just yet. Should I Buy a MIDI keyboard, Drum Machine? Also what is my next Software Purchase to fit my needs. THANKS

AGAIN SORRY FOR MY LACK OF KNOWLEDGE

I think your next software purchase should be a software programable drum machine. Cakewalk Project 5 is a great collection of virtual instruments to use in Sonar, one is called Velocity and is a great drum machine.

And yeah, the POD into your sound card is cool...lots of people do it.

Welcome to HRC.

You don't need a keyboard, you can program it from within Sonar, tho using a keyboard can make it easier if you are good with a keyboard, for me, I just do it manually.

You can also use Project5 as a standalone app to sequence in, it's quite a cool app.

Oh Ok, Sorry for asking so many stupid little questions but also i know this is a common problem to to my lack of experience but when i record through the POD the track has pops and clicks through Sonar LE, is this the soundcard, the POD, or my Sonar LE.

Again Sorry for the stupid questions

No stupid questions, that is kinda what this forum is for, getting questions answered.

I'd suggest first making sure you have all current drivers and software updates...then, play with the buffers in Sonar...all of that after, of course, you make sure you are not clipping.

it'd help to know the specifics of your PC as well. maybe there's a bottleneck somewhere.

low memory, slow hard drive, old windows, lots of malware/virus/internet buggers, etc.

stuff like that will certainly curtail your smooth tracking.

Windows XP
1.70GHZ
224 MB of Ram
E-MU 0404 PCI Interface

My computer doesnt have many things running. When i Record i Reboot clean to make sure no background programs are slowing it down, again i plan to upgrade eventually.

Thanks!

GET MORE RAM!

RAM is your friend, the more the better, and it's relatively cheap these days...at least for the type you'd likely need.

I was having sever clipping issues when trying to record @ 96. I was able to iron this out somewhat adjusting the buffers higher but am thinking it is a RAM issue as I just had one of my 1GB sticks die :(

My first thing to check would be clipping though. Just remember that you want a strong signal but It dosen't have to be as loud as a cd, that is where compression comes in.

SirPsycho, The software dB mentions can actually be your all in one application as it will record Audio as well. Sonar LE is a bit behind were you will be with Project 5. I use it to do complete mixes from time to time. I do use Sonar 5 PE as well, but find that sometimes I can get done very quickly in Project 5 without having to go back to the main sequancer program.

And indeed, ask all the questions you need too. That is what we are here for.

Well just as an aside, I have an E-MU card as well and it was clicking and popping despite an all new PC and plenty of RAM. The issue actually cleared up when I got rid of some software and drivers on my PC. I had old drivers for a Dazzle video converter meant to work with windows 95 along with some other stuff and that seemed to mess with things quite a bit.

This won't remove all unwanted programs, as they load themselves upon startup (if they're there).

If you've had the PC on the internet, and have been using Internit Explorir as your browser, then more than likely, you've got unwanted bugs or malware floating around.

Adaware, and spybot can clean bunches of the unwanted gunk from your PC, and using firefox will stop them from getting in in the future.

Doing a CTL-ALT-DEL, then Task Manager, then Processes, will show you what's running in the background. I drop some of the running stuff when I record with my laptop, which is from dell, and has a few un-necessary things running for recording audio.
