Audio Problem on my IBM

I use and IBM think centre desktop pc. My problem is that I cannot adjust the volume on the internal speaker on the machine at all. I dont really need to use this speaker but i can even power pc speakers from this so maybe this is the source of the problem. The audio operates on a programme called SoundMAX that comes installed on the machine. The volume on the internal speaker it up to its max all the time and will not change whenever i adjust the volume on it. Any one have any idea what this could be?!

also thought that i would mention that when i connect headphones to the headphones port on the computer I can hear a veryvery faint hiss and a slight crackle if i adjust the volume on whatever audio programme is open (windows media player). Also when i open the standard windows audio control pannel ( the little speaked in the bottm right of the start bar) and click mute all, the audio still does not mute. I have tried re-installing the drivers and resetting to default settings but none of this works.

Maybe the soundmax program has it's own volume control somewhere. Like another program off the start bar somewhere? or another program group?

Normally, I'd say the volume control applet should control the speaker output, but if it doesn't, then I'm kinda stumped. That's a hard one to troubleshoot from here.

In the windows volume control applet, there are other sound sources you can hide or view. In the advanced part somewhere, you can click which sources you can see. Turn those all on and see if you can control the correct one. Maybe the correct one for your soundmax was hidden.
