New Bruce Springsteen and new Neil Young

I have been a fan of these two guys since my high school days of the late 70's. I have enjoyed watching them change directions with their music, keeping it fresh and keeping me on my toes. So it is with much anticipation that I awaited the release of each of their latest CDs.

Bruce's new CD, "The Seeger Sessions" is a heck of a lot of fun for me to listen to! I love the old folk songs, and I love the new life that Sprinsteen breathes into them. (I've seen Pete Seeger in concert just as many times as I have seen Bruce!!)

Neil's new CD, "Living With War", isn't as much fun, but it certainly rocks, and it certainly is an exercise in free speech! I'll be interested to see what kind of backlash, if any, there is in response to the album. The guy can still put it out there at 60 years old!

I like both of these new albums, but I have a bias to their music in the first place. Anybody else had a chance to listen? Any thoughts?

NPR did a nice bit on The Boss....from what i've heard of it, i really like it, it's not somethin' i'll be buyin' soon, but the vibe of the album is way cool...it seems alot more intimate than his earlier stuff, which is the side i've always liked of him. i prefer "my hometown" "i'm on fire" "phillidelphia" over "born in the usa" "born to run" ect...although the energy is phenominal, his raspy quiet voice has always struck me deeply.

as for neil young, i'm not sure if i've heard anything from this one....does it have anything to do with the dvd he just put out?

There are few rock artists that annoy me, or that I understand the fame of more than "The Boss". neil Young I think is a good song writer, but should sell his music cuz his voice and look sucks... :-) But Bruce has always come of to me as a simple, trite and boring musician. I'll just never understand his success. Neil, I understand.

The unkempt look and the whiny, wavering voice are two of the things that I love most about Neil Young. It's not the same old thing. It's got personality. It's original. And, yes, he's a great songwriter.

I became a fan of Springsteen through his live shows. Neither trite no boring to me. Very energetic. He's always spoken to me and where I am...first as a reckless adolescent, then as young adult, finally, and now as a man trying to find a purpose in this world.

oh man, springsteen pours his heart out on stage like no other....that guy will go for 4 hours strait! back in the early days, the energy level was so intense, i don't think i've seen any other artist convey that much energy into a live show.... bruce writes simple songs for simple people, kinda like mellancamp, everyday people music...wich i think is great. ever pay attention to the arrangment and the sheer number of tracks on "born to run" that song is chalked full of extras, that's what gives it that 'over the top' sound. go from that to 'glory days' which strikes a chord in just about anyone over 25's heart......hell i'm only 26 and always appreciated it's message since i was a teenager.....man i don't see how anyone can dis bruce.

Not trying to "dis" him, obviously he appeals to a lot of people, I have just never been one of them...and "Glory Days" as long as you mentioned it, never did anything for me, and I am well over 25...

If people like him, and obviously they do, thats awesome, the "different strokes for different folks" thing there, I just always looked at him as somebody that should be playing a smokey bar on main street for 30 people, not somebody that should play arenas, I just never "got" his stuff, and never will...but, I am guessing a lot of people can say the same thing about a lot of bands I like too...

I'm 27

Neil I just don't listen to enough to form an opinion...

Bruce on the otherhand I absolutly dislike. The "Born in the USA" era stuff was great because it was "Raw Unadultered Pure Cold War Propoganda." :)

I can't stand Springsteen, but I like Neil Young alot, I'll have to check out his new album, though I'm not much into politcal/statement type music.

If you're not into political music, Olddog, you may want to avoid this one. (Although it does rock!) It's overtly political. On the other hand, if you don't approve of the President, like the majority of Americans (55% - 65% disapproval, depending on which poll you believe) then this CD is just right for you!

Oh yeah, and I can easily understand how people wouldn't like Bruce Springsteen. In high school, he was my musical hero, but then he grew up faster than I did. It took me a while (several albums that I didn't really get) to catch up with him. "The Rising" was a great album, and "The Seeger Sessions" is so much fun to listen to that I don't care what anybody thinks about it.

My top five all-time favorite musicians are (in no particular order): (1) Bob Dylan (2) Neil Young (3) Bruce Springsteen (4) John Prine (5) Arlo Guthrie. I guess that tells you a little bit about where I'm coming from with this thread.

I've enjoyed all of the comments and opinions so far. Keep 'em coming! That's why I started this thread.

ive always hated the boss too. i cant even really explain why--it's more than the songs.

however, i agree that he does put out more than a lot of energy on stage.

you know whats a great neil song? cinnamon girl. prehistoric grunge, that. great, great song.

I keep meaning to pick up the new Neil Young CD, but I just haven't had the time. Hopefully this week or next.

Jim, you like Arlo Guthrie too? My parents were huge into him...they still have a bunch of his albums on vinyl. I like him as well.

Neil's got some great stuff out...and even his not-so-great stuff is at least interesting. I've probably got more Neil Young albums and shows than any other artist.

Yeah, I've heard that version of "Cinnamon Girl", and it is very good (but I'd have to stop short of better than the original...) Whatever happened to those guys?

Matthew Sweet and Suzanna Hoffs have a new album of duets called "Under the Covers". (It's all songs from the 60's.) Their version of "Cinnamon Girl" is great too. I'm normally not a "covers" person, put that's a great album.

i dont really know anything about type O.

wasnt type O a classic-rock tinged metal band?

i think i remember being turned off by them but for the life of me cant remember why. youre the second person this week i've seen sing their praises. now i really wonder what turned me off.

nah, they were (more or less) goth, real slow, tuned down and everything was distorted (even bass)....peter steel (singer/bass) was in playgirl cuz he's over 7 feet tall (and hung like it) has one of the deepest voices i've EVER heard, and i saw him rip all his bass strings off in one fail swoop! mofo drank a bottle of wine and it looked like a 20oz. huge guy i loved them really, there forte was playin' at 50bpm (well usually) and their covers were always great. they did day tripper even.

Yes, it is true that the four individual photos (of the band members) can be used as the pieces of a kind of puzzle, but for now that's about all I'm going to say. I guess it will just be another nut to crack.
