Has anyone checked one of these out? I'm interested in finding something portable, stereo, easy to use, clean, quiet... for portable recording of atmospheres, sound effects, etc... I was figuring on buying mics, but this item has XY condenser mics built in. Anyone have any experience with this product?

I looked at it a while ago when it first came out. Gave it a quick spin, very quiet with now self noise at all. It will do 24/96 audio, which really got me interested. It will also record to wave format if you want. 4 gig of internal memory plus a slot for removable memory. And USB 2.0 for easy dumping to PC. And it felt like it was built like a tank, very sturdy feeling.

Only drawback is the price tag. Almost $1900.00, so my old set up is going to have to do for a while longer. But I would say for what it is and comparing to others at that level, it is worth the price.

I was thinking I could probably get into a laptop recording setup for the same price...

I have thought the same thing as well. There are some great stereo condensors mics out there that run on 9 volt or a couple AA battery so it isnt out of the question at all.

The only real good thing about that unit is its size, durability and quality. Not to sure I would want to follow my recording subject if it was mobile dragging a laptop with me.

I agree, size and weight are a major consideration. I wonder if wireless mics can be high enough quality...

I would imagine they would be as good or at least very close quality wise. I guess I have never looked for a stereo wireless before. Google here I come.

Found this one after about 15 pages. www.siliconchip.com.au/cms/A_104399/article.html

Didnt see anything from any big names yet though.

And look what HHB has made:
www.hhb.co.uk/hhb/usa/hhb...shmic/index.asp

Excerpt:
=======================================
The HHB FlashMic is the world’s first professional digital recording microphone. Combining a high-quality, Sennheiser omni-directional condenser capsule with an inbuilt, broadcast-quality Flash recorder, FlashMic is a convenient, easy to operate and durable recorder that’s perfect for press and broadcast journalism, or any other voice recording application.

A full bandwidth stereo version with optional Jecklin Disc would be nice...

Heck ya, mount that sucker in a parabolic dish and you would be set up for even those distant recording. Pity they dont have it in full bandwidth yet. I wonder what the price is on that bad boy?

Approximately $1300.00. Nice, but...

Hmm, it says for voice, but the specs say 20Hz-20kHz.

Still expensive and I need stereo. So hopefully they will do a stereo version. I know how to do it with two separate recordings, but not worth the hassle for the price of 2 mics. It's coming though, you can see it: A stereo, hand-held, extremely low noise, low handling noise, battery powered, all-in-one, programmable digital recorder with headphone jack and I/O.

yeah, the cheap computer speakers that sell for $20 a set say 20h-20k on them too, and they often say 100 watts :-)

dB has a point there for sure. I would need to see it to believe it.

And I gotta say. They will come down in price. As does all new technology. I remember when the Minidisc first came out. The one I ended up buying was about $750.00. I ended up getting it for under $200.00 less then 2 years later. Partly because they didnt catch on as fast as Sony had hoped.

And honestly, I didnt even buy a CD player untill at least 4 years after they went to market. Besided, Vinyl was still the biggest part of my collection. Still is really.

And I'm patient. I'll be waiting for that device at the right price! Hopefully, it will happen soon, I'd like to go out and capture sounds this summer...
