Hey ya'll,

Second post here but there will be alot more, along with finishing up my profile. I'm very very impressed on how everyone on this board conducts themselves in such a professional manner, that's what made me join and going to be here for a long time asking questions and providing as much advice as I can. Best board I have found yet!!!

I'm sorta new to the computer recording realm, well not really, just sorta new to the "the best and newest" stuff. Anyways, here's where I'm at to give you all a sample. This is a song for my band's demo (LMAO which is a long time coming now). It's called Suicide you can download it at www.freakattraction.com/Suicide.mp3 (if the D/L is a little slow it's cause I'm hosting it on my server here from home, other websites are also on there and bandwidth is pretty tight these days. Going to put them on a 3rd party website to host the tunes to keep the bandwidth down soon).

Not quite finished it though, still needs something on the main vocals (a little colour) a little massaging in some parts (off key), the guitar that starts the main solo has to be fixed, and the backups in the last chorus have to be worked on. A couple touch-ups on the drums also, no biggie. But if you can take a listen and let me know what you think it would be much appreciated... Any suggestions/comments? If ya have time check out the website also!!!

Have a good one!!!

Bass sounds a bit soft, a little muddled (could just be the fact that it's an mp3). Needs a harder edge to the bass guitar. Can't hear the kick drum very well. Vocals seem a little dry to me but I like the vocalist's tone (need to work on intonation). Could clean up some mouth sounds on the lead vocal. Pretty clean and clear recording...

Thanks for the input DungBeatle. I agree with you totally, need to clean up the bass aspect of the recording. I know I lost alot of it when I went to MP3 because the WAV sounds much better. I'm probably going to be fiddling with the kick and bass tonight, not really that big of a deal. The vocals are still dry, don't have anything on them yet. Don't want too much on them but those will also be cleaned up.

As far as the clean and clear part, I'm running all unbalanced instruments (guitar and bass) into the Behringer DI-100 and clean right to the board. For the effects on the guitar I'm using NI Guitar Rig, and for the bass just using a little bit of compression (factory Nuendo plug-in) and a touch of EQ. So it should be quite easy to fix up the bass.

But thank you so much for your advice, really appreciated!!

Hey Pharic, nice tune for sure.

DungBeatle, does it have a little Ziggy Stardust feel/sound to it, or is it just the mood I'm in tonight? The vocal part kinda feels that way as well.

I agree with DungBeatle on the bass, you can really pump that up with some heavier compression and a bit of EQ. The brass on the drums was a little loud here, but very clear. I liked the snap of the snare, nice and clear, and the high hat was as well very clear.

The guitars were difficault to judge as you stated it might be the mp3 encoding. I did however like the tone of the main guitar, and the distorted guitar is pretty good as well.

The main vocals were yes dry, but very present and the tone was very good. I would try a tiny bit of reverb, although it doesnt sound bad at all the way it is. Maybe bring the background vocals up as stated.

The kick as well can be punched with some heavy compression as well to give it a bigger bite.

Ya, after listening again a couple times I gotta agree it is the vocal part.

By the way Pharic, that is a compliment. If you dont know who Ziggy Stardust is find some older David Bowie records. Not sure if any of that stuff is released on CD.

Yup... "Ziggy Stardust" is one of his most famous albums...album title and song... The last cut on the Ziggy album is "Rock 'n Roll Suicide"...

And honestly that is one of my favorite albums of all time.

And I say one of meaning I have way to many favorite albums.

But indeed it was one of the greatist albums of that time, way ahead of his time that man was. And the live shows were something to marvel at. Those and Genesis featuring Peter Gabriel were something to marvel at.

Thanks once again DungBeatle and Noize2u. I do know "Ziggy Stardust" and let me just say that I'm honoured by the compliment. I had my bass player and another bass player over at my house last night. We listened to the track over and over and over and picked it apart in a raw WAV format. Here's the plan on paper:

1) Get that kick more in the mix!!! And I'm going to cut some of the brass out of the mix. We're very happy with the sound of the snare and the high-hat and also the toms.

2) The bass.... Now when you have a 2 bass players and one drummer in the room, you get alot of opinions LOL. What we decided was that it wasn't that muddy, but was sorta lost on the very low end. We're going to be adding some cut to it and boosting the low-mids a little to create more presents (colour) along with a little compression. We'll see how that works out...

3) The vocals... Talked with the singer last night on the phone. He liked the majority of it, he know's he was flat on some notes though. We're going to try to just play with it a little and use and auto-tune on it just for the one or two spots he wasn't happy. Then we're going to add some effects. LOL he was pissed cause I didn't add any in the first place cause last time he heard it all, the guitars were all clean and now they have effects. So I promised him that he will be more happy with it.

4) The guitar... We are pretty happy with the sound, actually very happy with the sound for the most case. Only thing that bugged us all was when the guitar player started the main solo, there's a little click there right before the first bend. Going to fix that up. The distorted parts are pretty decent, maybe bring it down a little or pan it cause there is already a clean track adding depth in the rear.

Well that's the plan so far anyways. The other bass player that was over is an amazing bass player and has an amazing ear. I copied the project to his I-Pod and he's also going to be working on it in a much better studio than what I have that's for sure. He's going to play and tinker with it also.

That's the one thing I love of having clean and clear recordings, it's just alot of tinkering now and the parts don't have to be replayed. And to all those just starting out, you don't have to spend alot to get a great sound, you let the great sound come to you!!!
