Hi all, I have got cubase SX and have used it for a while recording voice and guitar but I decided I also want to record midi aswell, so I bought a $400 Aus electric piano which I hoped would do the trick. It's a Yamaha PSR-E303. Also I had to buy a midi to USB cable so I bought a MIDISPORT UNO cable.

And now after all that, when I play something in cubase the first couple of notes can sound alright but as soon as I start putting more fingers on keys the sound turns into this ugly deep rumbling. This also happens on all of my native instruments packages and then the notes for some reason on the computer screen stay down sometimes and you have to hit them again to get them back up.

This really sucks anyone else have this problem before?

I am running WinXP Pro with an Audigy 2 ZS soundcard on a good machine. Unfortunately I do not have any other MIDI programs to play around with so I dont know how bad it may really be, is there a MIDI benchmark type thing that can help diagnose what is wrong?

Surely my keyboard isn't THAT crap is it? It works fine by itself and plugged into stereo jacks.

Plz plzzzzz help.

CHeers!!

A little googling reveals that this is a typical problem with the Yamaha PSR keyboards. Here's an excerpt from an Amazon feedback article:

I couldn't get this to work with my Yamaha PSR-275 keyboard, and I couldn't get any support. I tried to connect the keyboard to my PC (which has an Athlon 64, 1 GB RAM, etc.; there's nothing wrong with the computer) so I could play into PrintMusic 2006 notation software. Using MIDI ExpLab, I could output to my keyboard, but when I inputted from the keyboard to the computer, the computer only picked up what I was playing in little bits several seconds apart. Same thing in PrintMusic 2006. I couldn't figure out if it's the product, or something else. I borrowed a Yamaha Clavinova, and the interface cables worked fine with that keyboard, leading me to think the interface works fine and that my PSR keyboard was the problem. But then I found an online forum where someone said M-Audio admitted this does not work with all Yamaha keyboards. Note that XP users probably shouldn't install any drivers (there is a CD included); that isn't made clear in the very sparse product insert, but the company's web site says XP should just recognize it. The company apparently hasn't obtained an XP compatable logo from Microsoft, but they swear it works on XP, and it seems to. Eventually I returned this and got the Yamaha UX16 interface, installed the latest drivers from Yamaha's online site (which, strangely, don't always seem to "stick" to my computer), and my keyboard sends notes to the computer correctly. That seems to prove that the M-Audio Midisport Uno interface was the problem. This interface works with some keyboards, but not others. If you get it, save the packaging in case you need to return it (it is very nice packaging in that it just pops upen instead of forcing you to rip it apart).

it sounds like your midi echo is enabled in your software, to check this, disconnect the midi INPUT from your keyboard so that just it's output is beein' used...

Hmmmmmmm.......thanks for the replies, I have it somewhat worked out, it seems that if I choose to use the dual voice option on my keyboard the problem goes away. I really do not understand it. Even when I had my midi in pulled out it still did it, so it was just by an extreme amount of frustration, trying everything humanlly possible and the slimmest of chance that I discovered this dual voice solution. I am still not sure whether it is working at peak but it seems to be fine so far. The only complaint is the 50ms delay when using the ASIO multimedia drivers I am using, when I use the Creative ASIO drivers there is virtually no delay with the midi, however then I can't get my microphone to register if I use them for some silly reason.

Cheers.

50ms using ASIO, that is not good at all. I am guessing the creative drivers are not all they should be if you are having these kinds of problems.

As for the quick fix, I'm not sure that is the best solution. But if its working then I guess it is good for now.

I guess I would suggest following the advice given above for not installing the M-Audio drivers and just let windows find it and support it.

Well, I downloaded ASIO for all drivers and now I am getting very clean sound (still have to have dual voice enabled on the keyboard, and I ama getting 12ms or less latency.

12ms is much better, and more then acceptable. Not sure about what might be happening with turning the dual voice thing on, but if its working ya cant argue with that.
