New Releases

I know it's consumer whore-ism at its finest, but I wanted to know if anyone else on here was looking forward to the following new releases:

David Gilmour - On an Island (March 7th)
Morrissey - Ringleader of the Tormentors (April 4th)
Gary Numan - Jagged (March 21st)
Queensryche - Operation: Mindcrime II (April 4th)

Goodnight, and Good Luck DVD (March 14th)

Morrissey and Queensryche are of marginal interest to me, but the Numan and Gilmour ones (from what I've heard of them already) are going to be amazing.

For anyone who hasn't seen Gn&GL, do yourself a favor and rent it - it's a very good watch and had me (the eternal skeptic of the moving picture) riveted through FOUR romps to the theatre. =)

What I've heard of Gilmour and Numan... just amazing material.

The Queensyrche one is a bit of a curiosity as they're releasing a sequel to the original operation mindcrime...in narrative as well as concept and setting.

I'm not sure what I think of that. That'd be like Pink Floyd going back to the studio now (original lineup even) to record The Wall: What Happened Next!

I always did wonder what happened to that crazy Pink character after the wall came down. I'll bet he took up gardening...or started an internet forum and resource center dedicated to home recording. ...Wait a tick! O_O

I caught the first Gilmour release on the local rock station last weekend... yeah, it is beautiful . I remember there was a really well done 'brick-wall' of a bridge that thoroughly impressed me... looking forward to the rest of the album .

OK, heard 2 of the Gilmore tracks today. That one is a must have for me. Gilmore just has a style that relaxes me, yet makes me wanna drive fast all at the same time.

As for Queensryche, if it really is a sequal to that I will have to check it out for sure. They wrote some good music in the day.

I like Tool to be honest, but I have heard this is not going to be like the older stuff at all. Not that change is bad, I have just heard it isnt really the same Tool anymore. Time will tell I guess.

I'm anxious to hear how Iron & Wine's new one comes out. After Sam's collab with Calexico, which was extremely well done, I'm really curious to see what he does on his own.

Other than that, most of the ones that I've been looking forward to are already out. I grabbed Kicking Television from Wilco. It's a double live album but I was kinda disappointed. I still haven't even listened to disc 2.

I'd like to hear My Morning Jacket's new one, I hear they took a left turn for this one.

Surprisingly enough, I liked Belle and Sebastian's new one, Life Pursuit. I've never been that big of a fan of theirs but this one channels Marc Bolan, Ray Davies, and a few other decades-old brit-pop big shots.
Its a super-tight album, and loud as hell. Some of the mixes are really intense, like Suki In the Graveyard.

Grandaddy's new one is either out or coming soon. I really didn't like their last one, so I'm not holding my breath. I just keep hoping for another Sophtware Slump-caliber release, but I've yet to hear one.

Radiohead is in the studio, I'm pretty curious as to where they'll go next. Surely they've let go of a bit of that pretense they built up after releasing back-to-back-to-back albums that shook the foundations of music :)

I find it funny - you're naming half of the bands my girlfriend has been trying to get me into. You know, the major label indie bands. ^_-

Radiohead is an odd band. I think you hit it on the head with that whole "pretense" thing. But heck, it even messed up Pink Floyd after Dark Side of the Moon by all accounts - so I guess success is a tad more stressful than one might otherwise expect...

Even though there's nothing new under the sun with these guys, I'm very much looking forward to hearing some new Rammstein.

And while I'm on a metal tangent - anybody follow Opeth? Thoughts on Ghost Reveries?

Yup, the "not-so-independant" indies :D That's been my love for the past couple of years. I'm hooked on the variety of genres that get labelled "indie". I've discovered dozens of absolutely killer albums over the past couple of years, ones that I couldn't live without.

So give your girlfriend a hi-five for me :-D

I'll be sure to do just that.

Suddenly I'm reminded of the days in which all music was labelled "Alternative," at least at the local "The Wall." Let iTunes categorize your music for you and suddenly everything is Rock, Jazz, Pop, or Rap.

I move for the creation of a genre advisory board. This would be a wonderful federal program, methinks.

Tad, I wouldnt have pegged you as a Belle and Sebastion fan. My second oldest sons mother turned me onto them years ago, and I have been following them at a distance. I gotta agree they have really come a long way since their early club days and indie releases. I just picked up this one and it is as you said, LOUD. But in a good way. I think they have grown in a good way. Now lets just hope the corperate world doenst force them to change too much.

Yeah Sirrus indie is the new alternative LOL

Noize, I'm as surprised as you that I like Belle and Sebastian's new one. it's pretty darn strong, I've gotta admit. How do they get it that loud? It's gotta be that multiband compression and careful EQ I tell ya :D

Some of the call and response stuff is cheesy, but how good is "The Blues Are Still Blue"? Total T. Rex there!

I would be guessing that is how they are doing it, multiband would give that much emphasis on all of the spectrum. I usually dont care for CD's that are pumped up like that, not enough movement in the way it feels, but that one seems to have plaenty of life left in it even though it is pumped up that hard. Not sure how they did it either and I'm getting a little upset with that. I have been trying to use the L3 for that here on a couple very simple tracks and cant get it that loud without crushing the whole thing into a lifeless bit of noise.

And the T,Rex referance is funny. That is exactly how Mary at the local indie radio station described it as well.
