I've searched the gear gab archives some here but a lot of the info is dated. What recommendations do you guys have for an affordable pair of active powered monitors used with a computer setup?

Fixed the typo for ya.

And you can have alook here for active moniters. www.homerecordingconnecti...o_equipment.php

It is very hard to recomend a moniter as it is kind of a personal thing. If you were to take a poll here I am guessing you would find users using over 150 differant kinds of moniters, some better then others. But all to the taste of the listeners ear. I use KRK moniters for their ultra flat response and excellant out front bottom end which works well in just about any room.

THX Noize. I totally understand, and actually have been looking at the KRK RP 5's the most. One other related question though - is going ACTIVE/POWERED the right kind when connecting them to a PC? (I bought it brand new bout 8 months ago, if that info is needed)

Embassador:
I just purchased a pair of M-Audio BX5's. Since this purchase, it has saved me a ton of time on mixing adjustments. With my old pair of monitors, it was mix, out to the car to listen, back to mixing, back to the car, back to mixing, etc. They sounded great during playback once the mix was done. Nice bass response, and a crisp high end, nice mid-range...but it always took multiple tries to nail the mix. Sometimes it would sound good through the monitors, but once you listened in the car the bass would be way too hot, or the drums would be too low in the mix, etc.

With the M-Audio's, I usually nail the mix on the first or second try. They are very flat in response, but that's what you want for mixing. Everything is crystal clear & separated. For home-recording enthusiasts, I would highly recommend the M-Audio monitors, but like Noize2U says, it's really up to each person's individual taste. But I know if it sounds good and mixed through the M-Audio's it's going to sound good anywhere...in the car, stereo, jambox, etc. Definitely worth going to your local retailer and listen to them before you make your decision. That's my two-cents.

I have been researching the same issue as Embassador and I am getting confused. I am on a limited budget. Am I better off going used or new. I too have read good things about M-Audio speakers, Am I better off to go with the BX5, BX5A, or the SP-5B.

I would think anything from M-Audio is going to be an above-average purchase that you can't go wrong with. My BX5's are pretty large in size, but I personally wanted to get monitors I would have for the rest of my life and that would be large enough in the event I ever expanded the size of my studio. To be quite honest, I've never cranked them 100%. I have heard some very good things about the BX5A's, which I believe are a little smaller in size, but that the sound quality is as good as/if not better than the BX5's. If you have a local retailer that you can go sample some monitors, might be the best move. Consider the dimensions of the monitors as well...what size monitors is your space willing to handle? Remember, you don't need monsterous size monitors in order to mix or get loud enough levels to enjoy a cranked up playback. Notice, in every large commercial studio, they do most of their mixing on very small sized monitors. Also, consider your budget in your decision. I had a few extra bucks at the time so I went for the larger size. Go check out your local retailer, listen to the BX5A's and all the other ones they have. Who knows, you may find something totally different from M-Audio that you prefer...but you won't know unless you check'em out for yourself. Just take your favorite CD to the store with you, have'em pop it in and sample everything they have. Should be fun. That's why we do this, right?

Embassador: My mistake. In my write up above, everytime I mention the BX5, replace it with the BX8's. Duh. I have BX8's, not the BX5's. The BX8's are the monsters. Anyhow, any monitors from M-Audio are going to be good for recording/mixing.
