Il just put all these questions in one topic to keep things tidy.
1. How exactly do i compress recorded tracks? is this the same as an effect that you put on the tracks?
2. In very basic terms whats are the essential things you must do to recorded drum tracks?
3.What shuold i do to a drum track (all parts of the kit in one track) to enhance the overall sound?
I have read alot of the recording drums articles on this site but these are questions I found it hard to get answers to.
thanks

Feb 12, 2006 11:43 pm If you have outboard compression, then you just set the compression on while recording, but if your taking about insert effects, then yeah you just put them on like other effects.
Basically the standard things to do with drum tracks for me, is compressing (coz i dont have an outboard compressor), eqing each piece is very important, panning everything is a huge thing, and then in the end if i really need it i add alittle reverb to each piece to give them more taste.
If you recorded your whole kit into one track, what i use to do (dont quoute me on this) i would try to isolate certain eq's like get all the highs out of a track and just leave the bassy frequencies, and then id make that into a track, and then the same with the mids and highs. So this way i have a bunch of tracks and like your high end will have very little of your bass drum track in it, so its kind of seperating your kit out a bit. And then do the above treatment.

Feb 12, 2006 11:52 pm what i do, cause I use the Line in of my soundcard is Seperate either the Kick or the Snare.. But i seperate the kick, cause i think that's more important..
So on my board, I pan kick HARD LEFT and pan Snare/OH HARD RIGHT. (i only use 3 mics) and record them to AA 1.5 in 2 Mono Tracks. That way, i have seperate control over the kick. then with the right channel which is the OH And snare, I use a Multiband Compressor and find the snare in the frequencies then boost it up a bit to my liking and just eq'ing out the stuff i dont want and boosting the stuff i want.
hope this helps.. if it doesnt ? hell, im a noob anyway :D
Feb 13, 2006 10:50 am Are there any sort of free compressor downloads available or can anyone tell me if these are in cool edit pro? I can seem to find them at all.
Feb 13, 2006 10:51 am I am pretty sure Cool Edit pro has some sort of compressor in it...probably with a set of presets. if not, go to www.directxfiles.com
Feb 13, 2006 10:52 am holy ****, DirectXFiles is gone, now it just points to Cakewalk.com...WTF? That site was a great collection of free plugs.

Feb 13, 2006 11:34 am I just started using the fish fillet compressors and gates from here
www.digitalfishphones.com...2&subItem=5
In the floorfish (gate) they have presets for each individual drum that you would want to gate (snare, kick, hi hats, ect). The blockfish also is a nice compressor. Its got some nice presets for the snare and kick drums.
Hope this helps

Feb 13, 2006 07:19 pm Oops, wrong kind of compression there JimmyBoy.
That type of audio compression refers to compressing the file size of the audio files themselves. Like MP3, which is a audio compression codec. It makes the audio files smaller in size at the cost of losing quality as well (lossy). FYI that monkey's audio is a lossless compression codec. It will reduce the size of the audio file without losing any audio quality.
What you're wanting is a VST or DirectX compression plugin. Here's my favorite (classic compressor):

Feb 14, 2006 08:43 pm And there does not appear to be any news of what happened to directxfiles.com either. That kinda stinks.
