recording/midi interfaces
I am looking to get some equipment to record with and need some advice. I already have access to a Shure SM57 and Cakewalk Sonar. I want to be able to record guitars, bass, vocals, and plan to use midi for other instruments such as keys and drums. I only need to record one track at a time and am wanting to spend no more than $300-400 total. I looked at the TonePort, but was leaning towards something like the MAudio AudioBuddy since I can always use software modeling in Cakewalk. Would it be better for me to get an internal soundcard? I am recording to a desktop computer so I think an internal interface would be good, but would I have to buy a separate mic preamp? I also need a midi controller to use for keys and drums. What would you recommend for the best quality/versatility? Thanks for the help!

So My New M-Audio Axiom 49 Should Be Coming In Soon...
Well this is kind of embarassing, but this will actually be my first midi controller. I've always put in all of my music note by note with a mouse, but I've decided it's time to get myself a keyboard.

I decided to go with the Axiom 49. I played the 25 and it felt great, but I didn't want to go with the 61 key so the thing will fit on my desk.

Now for the question:

I'm going to be using the keyboard for the most part with Reason 3.0 and FL Studio. I've never had to set up a midi controller for use in a program before, so I'm not exactly sure how it works. I read through the manual online, but there was a bit too much tech garble and it's kind of difficult to do without the keyboard in front of me. What I really want to know is how difficult is it to map out various functions to different sliders or knobs? For example can I just start up reason, right click a parameter and hit assign to knob or something? Well, I'd imagine it's not that simple, but I think you got the picture. Any input would be appreciated.

Need some advice...(an intermediate newbie :P)
heh, I'm not really a newbie to the home recording scene, but I am a newbie to 'doing it right', like getting the right equipment and so forth. lately I've been doin' some research, and getting on the right track (I hope!).

I've gotten some equipment over the last few months, and now I'm just wondering what kind of effects units I should get. I've been looking at the Alto ACL2 PRO, or the Behringer Composer Pro for dynamics, the Alto Control 30 for EQ, and the Alto BETAVERB, or the Behringer V-VERB PRO for verb. but I'm not sure if I want to keep going with the alto/berhinger trend I seem to be setting, or if I should perhaps try some new brands, heh.

my current equipment...

PC: AMD Sempron, 2.0GHZ, 256mb RAM, a 40gb and a 160gb hard drive (not that great eh).
software: Windows XP Home, Sonar 4, Guitar Rig 2 and Reason 3, other stuff..
soundcard: Yamaha UW500
preamp: Behringer MIC200 (got it a fair few months ago)
mics: Sennheizer 8155 (I think, can't read the model on it properly), and a Lane LM545
mixer: Alto AMX120
DI: Berhinger Ultra-G GI100 (still actually waiting for it to arrive)

so yeah, I'm mainly wanting to go hardware more than software since my computer isn't that great at the moment. but not only that, but I like the more hands on approach.

I'd also like some recommendations on maybe some other equipment I could get too, like some better mic's maybe, and I'm also interested in obtaining a MIDI keyboard and/or sampler.

the kinda music I work on differs. I'm currently in a band who does mainly rock/metal stuff, but I also do some solo work, which is a bit industrial/electronic/ambient/anything else I can come up with. so yes, any help would be much appreciated.

sure hope I posted this in the right forum...

hard to find bass....
i'm thinkin' about selling/trading my Pedully Pentabuzz, for something that dosn't have that darn paint+clear coat on the neck....the squeeks suck and i much prefer the feel of an unfinished's the thing, me and mom have been searching ALOT of bass companies websites and i have yet to find one that meets my needs...all i ask is for a satin oil finish (or even none!) 5 strings, and it's GOTTA be fretless. am i beein' too pickey? i'd think for sure, most major companies would have a higher end model that fits the bill...last year we had a Court that was a 4 string and i fell in love with it, turns out they don't make that model (Artisan) in a 5 string!! aarg!! warwick, carvin, dean....i found a warrior but it had a 5,000 dollar price tag...i'm needin' it to be under 1,500 bucks or so...any ideas? i could sand down my neck on the Pedulla but that would kill the resale value...bah

Home Made Hit Show Looking for Gear Reviews
Hi guys, my podcast is now including short (3-5 mins) audio gear reviews. I'd love to get some from the people here, mics, mixers, recorders, software, amps etc anything good for the home musician.

I'm always on the look out for songs of course and I'm now looking for spoken intro's to the songs including descriptions of gear used and how it was recorded and written.

Thanks to Dan for the continued support.

Behringer UB802
I am considering getting a mixer for the following purposes.
1. recording into a computer (probably two tracks - guitar+guitar/bass together)
2. for live shows i wanted to mix 2 guitars, a bass and/or a keyoard before sending to an amp cos they always **** up my sound)

I can get my hands on the behringer pretty easily so does anyone think it will be helpful for me?
