i just found about this, and i am wondering if opening suspicious attachments is the only way this thing can spread. ive never seen a worm that actually overwrites documents and pictures before!

Yep as far as I understand it you would have to open an extremely dodgy attachment (usually claiming to be porn) to get infected and the virus activates on the 3rd of the month (today for example).

Once active I think it tries to replicate across networks (but only LAN type).

If you're virus definitions are up to date you should have no problem.

Not a bad idea to run a full scan at the beginning of the month for the forseeable just to make sure.

And yes it has been unusual for worms to be this malicious...up to now.

Worms are just as dangerous as viruses. The only real difference is they way they spread. For example viruses require some sort of interaction to infect your computer (such as opening an infected attachment). Worms on the other hand can spread on their own without any interaction. They (worms) usually spread computer to computer through unprotected PC's (IE: no firewall).

To protect your PC from infection (whether this one or others) make sure that your OS is properly patched, you have a correctly configured firewall and anti-virus definitions up to date.

i've seen this kama sutra thing referred to as a worm and a virus. but it seems you have to open an attachment, which i dont think i would ever do, to get infected. making it a virus, i guess.

if i got a message from one of my friends that said 'best video clip ever,' that would be the only one out of that list of possibilities that i would open, because it sounds like something any of my friends could potentially send. last night i couldnt remember if anything like that had come my way since the 16th. but i guess it didnt, since everythings still fine.

I heard it disables antivirus programs. My dad was using a 12-mo. free teial version of Computer Associates Antivirus, with the Windows XP firewall on and totally updated everything. It got him and totally froze the desktop. After restarting twice and trying to get it to work even in safe mode, we started getting blue screens saying "invalid boot sector" I had to blitz, reformat, and reinstall WIN XP and all software ! So yes, that Sutra worm IS potentially damaging !!!!!!
