Hello! i was curious if anyone has any techniques they could share on how to get an old/compressed sound out of my music? i recently took a job composing a short film score and this was one of the ideas that was thrown out there, though i've been curious for quite a while how to achieve this sound.
the most i've done is added slight fuzz, and played heavily with the EQ ... but its definetly not at the point i'm trying to reach.
thanks!

There's some real information breakdown here, I'm gonna guess you're looking for the 'scratchy' and 'poppy' sound that old vinyl records give?
I'm also going to have to guess on what hardware you're using, and what software, if any.
If you're using a computer, then you could use one of the available plug-ins that create this sound for you. Just put in on the master aux, and it should do the trick.
kvraudio probably would have something to do this for free

Jan 20, 2006 03:37 pm i should've been more specific about my setup, it is computer based recording ... i use various programs: Reason/Orion Pro/Sound forge/Audition and typically lay everything out in ACID (sort of found my Niche with this program, even though most of my recordings are not Loop-based). I am looking for that scratchy poppy sound, but also something that can mimmick that sort of hollowness to the audio. It would help if i could articulate exactly what i'm hearing in my head, but i'm having a little trouble doing-so.
as far as my hardware, its a soundblaster audigy 2, 24-bit soundcard that is premixed through a decent mixer. I'm confident its possible to get the sound i'm going for with my setup, i just don't know all the necessary steps.
are there any VST plugins you know of? i'll check out kvraudio too. thanks!
Jan 20, 2006 03:51 pm look for an old plugin from Steinberg called the Grungelizer, it's the bomb.
Jan 20, 2006 03:58 pm Izotope's 'trash' I think is free from their websire, just gotta sign up. That is a wicked plug in.
Also MDA combo from one of the MDA bundles at www.kvraudio.com has a nice 'radio' setting.

Jan 20, 2006 04:22 pm Izotope! Thanks Col., I've been sitting here for 1/2 hour trying to remember that. Izotope makes a VST plugin called "vinyl" that'll do just what you want.
Jan 20, 2006 04:38 pm Vinyl, not trash! Thanks tadpui, I've been sitting here for 1/2 hour trying to remember that

Jan 20, 2006 05:53 pm you probably want to mess with some reverb to give it that room feel. Also you can get some good light compression results if you tweak the distortion effect in reason (can't remember the name of it off the top of my head, something to do with destruction...scream maybe...bahhh!).

Jan 20, 2006 08:12 pm Yep, Izotope Vinyl is the one taht works best. And it is free at there site. YOu do need to register for it but it is free. I use it all the time, along with EQ it works great.

Jan 20, 2006 08:29 pm The crappy thing about the grungeliser is that the crackle is a loop and really obviously so.

Jan 23, 2006 09:48 am Ahh, but do a couple of 'em and cross-fade back and forth between them randomly... Nothing like a little human intervention by use of "automation"... lol
