please help me! - difficult us122 latency problem

hi all,

I am using cubase xe with a tascam us122 audio interface. When recording audio tracks I am using the direct monitoring option on the us122 and it sounds great - zero latency! however, when I plug my
m-audio keystation (midi controller) into the us122's midi in socket and play it I am getting almost a whole second of latency making it impossible and infuriating to play. I have reduced all buffer sizes down to the minimum possible in cubase, taken the sample rate down to the minimum, lowered the us122's control panel settings to use minimum disk buffers, unplugged all other usb devices to save on usb bandwidth, set the hub controller to prioritise midi data and installed all the latest updated drivers for my hardware.

I don't know what else I can try.
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Are you powering the Keystation via USB or powering from a wall plug? If via USB, try the wall plug. My Radium 49 sometimes has some latency if powered via USB.

Mine does too, with the US122, and a juno-d. 1/2 second delay. I've not pursued it further, and haven't found a solution.

You may find that asio4all is faster, but I haven't tried it.

I know that doesn't help, but I figured I'd throw my .02$us in on this.

hey,

thanks for the help, and happy new year.

I'm using a wall plug to power the keystation, but the latency is still at least half a second.

I will give the asio 4 all drivers a go, but I reckon it may be time to dump my us122 and go with a firewire interface.

WHat USB ports do you have, or what version of USB does the us122 support? Is it USB 2 or the older USB 1.1...the difference is bandwidth and could well be the problem.

yeah, I think that is the problem the us122 runs on the old 1.1 protocol. I just don't think it can handle the bandwidth.

What really annoys me is that tascam have bothered to put a midi input on this device when it clearly can't handle midi data transfer from interface to PC and back out again without being so latent that it is not possible to use.

I have tried the asio 4 all driver and that does improve the latency problem, but not enough.

I've also tried using logic 5.5 and cubase SX to see if it could be a software issue. It did run a little better in logic, but again not well enough.

Can anyone recommend me a good audio interface?

My PC supports USB 2.0, firewire and PCI -
Intel pentium 4 - 3.2ghz
1gb DDR RAM
Cubase LE/ SX
Logic platinum 5.5
Condenser and dynamic mic
M-audio keystation 49e

I need something which acts as a stand alone soundcard with the following:
Jack and XLR inputs
Phono outputs and headphone output
Phantom power for condenser mic
MIDI in/output

My max budget is around £200 - sorry not sure what that is in US$!

Thanks all

Yeah, the 1.1 is likely a big part of the problem...let me ask you this tho...

have you tried not running the keystation thru the us122 and just running it into a USB port straight away? or is audio being generated by the keystation itself and the audio running thru the us122?

I use a Radium 49, and all the audio is generated on the PC by softsynths and such, so it just goes into a USB port by itself...could that work for you? I guess I am just unsure of exactly what you have tried in terms of how everything is hooked up. Perhaps the latency isn't from the us122, but from the USB bus or the keystation...gotta bypass one or two things and find the root of the actual problem.

As far as devices go, if you can I would suggest going internal PCI and just avoid external bandwidth issues all together. Not sure how many inputs you need at any one time, but I have been very happy with my ESI Juli@.

Here are a bunch of PCI interfaces www.homerecordingconnecti...udio+Interfaces the M-Audio 2496 is nice, and a decent price as well.

thanks for the tip!

The midi signal is working better now - I have bypassed the us122 and plugged the keystation straight into the USB port. Can't here any latency now, keystrokes and sound output seem to be in sync.

I guess I'll just use the us122 for audio and go direct USB for midi.

I'll check out the soundcard links you posted as well.

Thanks for your help and have a good new year.
