got some ram here. its kingston brand. is that sucky? the 1 GB pack was cheaper than the 512 pack of other brands. the kingston ram came as two 512 cards for less than a single 512 of other brands.
my computer right now: has 512 of ram. but it is IN a slot already, which leaves me with one free memory slot. i guess this means--duh--that i only have use for one of the two kingston 512 cards right?
my god what a dumb question. i just always thought factory ram came pre-installed on the motherboard or something, not as a card in there. guess not.
do they make 1 gig cards? if they did maybe i could add that in the free slot and get myself above 1 gig total? itd then be 1 gig plus 512.

Dec 26, 2005 08:54 am yes they make 1gig sticks... I'm not exactly up on my hardware knowledge anymore...but I find it supprising that it only takes 2 sticks... usually they take 4... whats the model number on the motherboard (or if you can' find it model number for the PC if it's store bought)
Dec 26, 2005 09:34 am Lots of Mobo's come with only two slots now that 1GB sticks have become more affordable it seems to be kind of a trend.

Dec 26, 2005 10:25 am The reasoning behind the two slots is the "timing" issues you run into with 3 or 4 slots. Since they're further away from the controller, it's "harder" to control them. My mb has 3 slots. If I put in 2 stix, I can go full buss speed. If I fill that 3rd slot, my buss speed gets cut in half. Other boards do not have that restriction. It just depends on your chipset, the implementation and the drivers of the manufacturer. "Consult your owner's manual for details..."
Dec 26, 2005 02:03 pm thank you guys i will. i thought 1 gig sticks were a long shot; im psyched now.
Dec 26, 2005 02:05 pm wow looks like the price difference is HUGE. 44 bucks for the 512 and then up into the 150-250 dollar range for the gig sticks. what ever happened to 'ram is cheap?'
Dec 26, 2005 02:07 pm compare that to the price just a couple years ago...ram is cheap...

Dec 26, 2005 03:00 pm forty, keep looking. I can get 1 gig sticks here for about $109.00 and thats in a store, not online.
Dont know if they ship or not but you can look and see. www.tranmicro.com
Super Talent $108.75
Kingston $119.75
Dec 26, 2005 05:02 pm nice! ok, next step is to figure out if my system can take gig sticks. and if it can take one gig stick and one 512 stick. any idea how i would find that out?
Dec 26, 2005 05:21 pm Check what chipset your mobo uses, then do some google-wackin on that chipset...The mobo manufacturer will likely have info about the limits of the product as well.
Dec 26, 2005 06:14 pm k, thanks.

Dec 28, 2005 05:52 am You're better off not "mixing" stix, or mis-matching sizes &/or speeds... with some computers, to utilize the "doubling", you need 2 "matched" stix... This isn't like the days of PC100 memory anymore...
Dec 28, 2005 03:21 pm what about mixing brands? is that ok?
i definitely wont be able to afford two 1 gig stix. but like i said, i have one 512 here but the gift i got is two 512 stix. if there is in fact a problem with mixing brands, then my dilemma here is actually solved because i would have no choice but to use the two 512 gift stix of the same brand.
however, i suspect that there is no problem with mixing brands.
Dec 28, 2005 04:00 pm some PC's will act funny with different sticks in them, but it's not common. AT least be sure they are the same speed and specs.
