Open Office

I've heard a few tidbits about this linux - based open office, then I heard they have a windows port as well.

I then heard there's some city or state government somewhere that has totally converted their office apps over to open office. So I figured I'd give it a whirl.

So far, it's pretty nice. I haven't done much with it, but it's opened my word docs, and my excel spreadsheets without problem. I don't do tons of fancy stuff, just the basics, but for the once-in-a-while office user like me, it comes in very well.

Just figured some of you guys may use office like I do, and be able to use a free alternative to the normal $$$ solutions.

Yeah, I posted here when version 2.0 was released. It was in Massachusetts that the gov't dumping of MS Office happened, and actually, the latest issue of InfoWorld has an article regarding expecting more and more places to start dumping MS Office due to it's proprietary file formats whereas OpenOffice, STar Office and others are using a standard open document format which I believe is a standard that is XML based.

I use MS Office right now only because MS gave me a copy of Office 2003...once Office 12 comes out I'll prolly dump it and go with Open Office. I like MS Office, but I don't like it as much as the price tag would dictate.

yeah, I've been using OO for a couple years in both windows and linux and it works pretty well... not somthing that you would write a book in (same goes with MS Office) but I can type and do spreadsheets and the HTML editor supports CSS @page for typesetting.
