hey guys im new to all this stuff. I have read up of a few of the beginner articles and what i have read seems that i need a mixer n preamps n stuff.
All i want for now is just to be able u record some of my songs into a program. How???? When i say how i mean.... can i connect my accoustic guitar straight to my sound cards line in.. then how do i capture the music via the program im using?? am i recording?? ...
I recently purchased a Condenser Mic that has an XLR connection. can i just buy a cable that converts the cable into a smaller one that goes into the line in port? IM SOOOO LOST....
all i really want for the moment is simple simple recording.... and by that i mean more then the windows sound recorder. :)

Dec 02, 2005 10:03 am You need a preamp between the mic and the sound card to bring the signal of the mic to line level. You can do this most easily by purchasing an inexpensive mixer like the good ol' Behringer 802 or something like that, or spending more and getting a nice dedicated preamp...then the preamp runs into the sound card.
Welcome to HRC, and hey, you may want to wait more than 11 minutes before posting a thread bump like "k".
Dec 02, 2005 10:08 am There are free recording apps on the web. Here is one:

You'll probably need phantom power to run your mic. Get either a small mixer with phantom power (behringer has some cheap ones at musiciansfriend.com) or a mic preamp with phantom power (also at musiciansfriend.com). Connect your preamp/mixer into your line in on your PC, plug in your guitar/mic to the preamp/mixer, hit record and play away. You'll probably need a decent recording soundcard too, as the motherboard soundcards and Soundblasters are not intended for this, and may produce lots of latency.
