Hardware vs. Software

I'm in the midst of a dilemma. I'm about to make a purchase, but am undecided about what direction to take.

Which side of the fence are you on? Would you go for the hardware, i.e. Mpc or Roland - or would you take the software path, i.e. Reason or FL Studio?

Which do you think has the most punch?

I'm very much aware of the saying "it's the ear, not the gear", but I also know how important quality sound is.

All your thoughts and/or opinions are appriciated.

Musically,
EmSee

Yeah, unless portability and simplicity are big requirements for your recording situation, I'd go the software route.

There are so many free and inexpensive effects and utilities that you can use for computer-based recording, the possibilities are nearly endless. You can get your foot in the door for free, and the price range goes all the way up to what you'd pay for a hard disk recorder.

Plus, software is more visual, and I'm a very visualization-oriented person when it comes to technical things. SEEing waveforms and being able to click, drag, drop, right-click, etc. on them makes much more sense to me while editing and tracking than some obtuse menu system on a hard disk recorder.

There aren't really any wrong choices, but since you asked for opinions, there's mine :)

I like the software route, although I am known for being an elcheapo-type fella... I've got a piece of cheese Casio keyboard, hooked-up via midi that fires a couple soft synths and then sounds like a million bux. And I only need the one, what with all this "virtual" stuff. I can even play a reasonable "bass guitar" with the thing... simply amazing. Me - doing midi - who'd a-thunk?

I was thinking about the easy-to-use/point and click aspect of software, added to the visual aspect of it, my main issue is sound quality. Plus I want to keep some of that real live hands-on funk. Do you think it's possible with software?

You can do both. Get a control surface for your software! : D

To my ears, my ProteusX Lite sounds just as good as, maybe better than allot of hardware synths. The sound quality depends on the gear you're playing thru, whether it'd be a hardware synth or a soft-synth, plus the quality of the patch you're using, which in some hardware synths is nothing more than software... Imagine that!

Sound Quality with software synths is a moot point these days. I have all but stopped using my hardware because the software has gotten so good, actually better for points stated above. There are things I can do in software I could never come close to doing with racks full of hardware. And I can do it much faster and easier.
