I'm trying to build a laptop recording studio that basically has all the software I need. I'm not really interested in having the resources of an engineer but having programs that I can use to record and mix my songs with ease but not sacrifice any quality. I'm already happy with my looping program and my notation program but I want to get something better than Cool Edit Pro 2 for my recording software.
What is out there that will give me studio quality and a lot of control and options but I don't have to be an engineer to record? Now I don't mean completely user friendly like cool edit pro but just not insane.

Oct 22, 2005 07:39 pm My soundcard is a soundblaster audigy 2 zs notebook. I'm really only interested in a solid, versatile multitrack recorder. I already have Finale 2006 for notation and FL Studio 5 Producer Edition for looping and other various things.

Oct 23, 2005 12:09 am You could dibble-dabble with Audacity for editing and Kristal Audio for multi-tracking to get your feet wet in those areas. Both are free, but quirky. That'll give you a taste of what Cubase can do, if you add these two with your 2... You might also consider Cakewalk Guitar or Home Studio. There are several versions of them. Magix has Home Recording Studio. A lot of the titles try to be an all-in-one solution, and most of them do succeed rather well at it. Basically speaking, the more money you spend on the software, the more plug-ins you're getting.
Oct 23, 2005 12:54 am I've been using Cakewalk for years since the early versions, so I would say HomeStudio would be a good start without breaking the bank but I would also recomend Adobe Audition 1.5 as it will give you pretty much the same multitracking abilities with seperate individual Wave editing with a lot of solid plug ins for just a few extra bucks. It's easy software to learn and the Adobe Classroom in a Book studies are real help in lowering the learning curve. Also a lot of good free tutorials out there.

Oct 23, 2005 11:33 am Take a look at n-track. www.fasoft.com
Very easy to use, good workflow, good sounding output, and cheap.
Free demo as well, that lets you do all the main stuff (minus mixdown, and multiple effects).
Oct 23, 2005 11:34 am I also suggest Home Studio from Cakewalk being a good starting app. They just released a new version, and I gotta say I was really impressed with it www.homerecordingconnecti...tory&id=611
Mackie Tracktion is good too www.homerecordingconnecti...tory&id=607 the downside is it's very different from other apps, so upgrading to bigger apps later will be tougher due to the different logic used in working in it.
Also, MultitrackStudio just released version 4 www.homerecordingconnecti...tory&id=649 and it's been one of my favorite shareware tracking apps. Very easy to use, very powerful and a great price.
