Making Connections--Boss rc-20XL Loop Station

Ok, I know that you fine gearheads will be able to answer this question. You've always been there for me.

In the manual for the BOSS 20XL Loop Station, it says, "...Use a cable from Roland to make the connection. If using some other make of connection cable, please note the following precautions. Some connection cables contain resistors. Do not use cables that incorporate resistors for connecting this unit. The use of such cables can cause the sound level to be extremely low, or impossible to hear."

Does this mean that I need to buy SPECIAL cables? Couldn't we just use regular guitar cables? Let us know so we can use this fun product or scrounge up money to buy these special cables.

Thanks and rock on!

What are you trying to hook-up to, a computer? Is it a digital connection?

nah your instrument cables are fine for that.....

if you were steppin' down from say an active instrument (9V battery) to an XLR mic input on a mixer, then yes, you would need a resistor (usually inside a direct box) because mic level is way weaker than line level.

Ok, so do we would only need a resistor if we were going into a mixer? What exactly is a resistor cable? Is there a brand we need to get?
If we were going to mic say, a toy piano, would we have to have a resistor from a direct box? What is this "direct box" you speak of?

We're trying to incorporate the Loop Station onstage.

Thanks for your help.

Gotta agree with WYD to try just plain instrument cables on it first. Roland does sometimes require the use of a propriatary cable for output level reasons. I did notice on the website that it has an output level of -20dB and that is pretty low so there might be the reason for using their cables. But try regular ones first.
