Stereo out with Monitors from mono sound card jack

I have two monitor speakers I want to hook up to my computer. There are not powered and have the standard red and black split wire connection capacity. They are 8 ohm/nominal small speakers. I know I need an amp or a stereo receiver with an aux to get the sound from the comuter to the speakers, but how can I be sure I will get the stereo split (the same as with the computer monitor speakers) when I am coming out of the computer mono jack and into a amp/receiver ?

Does anyone have any ideas on how I should do this?

Much appreciation!!

Marcus

Are you sure it's a mono jack? It may be a stereo jack that just has both signals in a single plug, as is very common on computers. If it's a mono jack you can send the signal to two speakers with a spliter, but it'll still be mono, just in two speakers..."stereo" is two speakers running different signals.

Welcome to the wonderful world of audio cables.

Notice that this cable has two rings. This implies that it has three connecting points on the cable. The Tip, Ring and Sleeve (Cable is sometimes called TRS). Regardless of the size, cable like this can be used for 'balanced' aplications or 'stereo' applications. If being used as a 'stereo' cable, the Tip becomes the left channel, the Ring becomes the right channel, and the sleeve becomes the ground.

This cable has only two connecting points, the Tip and the Sleeve (Sometimes called TS). It is used in 'mono' applications.

Hope that helped!

Thanks gents!

I am not sure about the plug DB. It prob is stereo.

Yes Colonel, that did help.

I guess I could get either an amp or a receiver to power and split the signal though huh?

If it's the Audigy we are talking about, then yes, it's a stero plug, but it's one jack. Any Radio Shack has "Y" cables that turn one stereo plug into two mono plugs...you may need some adapters to get the exact plugs on either end, or, make your own, but you CAN do it.
