My mix is distorting in places

Hi, I'm mixing a song using cubaseSX and I've found my song is actually distorting during some sections, what can I do to avoid this but retain a decent volume?

compression perhaps, maybe a limiter...keep it from clipping.

yeah check your signal flow (one at a time) and make sure it's not one single track (or more) then you gotta keep in mind when mixing digital (summing) when you mix say 10 tracks all at once, their COMBINED volume will cause the master buss to clip......this is called "headroom" bacically you're using all available bits in mutiple instants.

back off all the faders to begin with and play with it for awhile....sometimes it has taken me two SOLID hours to go over all effects and faders and set optimal gain (or atleast what i think is).....

good point WYD, first you have to find out WHERE in the chain the distortion is introduced...and digital has NO sense of humor in clipping, analog does a little bit...

I dont think its any one track, well I mean the whole thing is clipping most of the time on the master bus. but if I keep bringing this down I will have crappy volume. Its just I exported the audio mixdown and I noticed the soft popping of distortion in a couple of places. If I bring the mix down then master it back up will it re-appear? Im a little new to some aspects of this, so forgive me.

When mixing, just get a good mix, the volume issue can be taken care of in mastering...just get a good, clean mix. it's not the best way to do it, but it'll work, otherwise, are you limiting and compressing on the master bus? Mute tracks one at a time, see if removing any one track will remove the clip...if muting any single track does, then it's a summing issue like WYD mentioned.

compression will level these high points out so its louder overall. stick a compressor on the master fader, that should sort it i'd think
