drum recording problem

hi. i've recently got some new drum mics but i'm getting some problems with them.

this is my setup: i've got the drum mics plugged into a preamp, which is then plugged into an Edirol thing which plugs into my comp, and then i record onto Digital Performer.

basically, my problem is that, i can record drums for a few minutes fine, but then if i press stop and start recording again, there is a strange sort of electronic echo coming through the monitor which also shows up on the recordings.

could somebody please tell me what this may be and how to fix it? much appreciated.
