Any Iron & Wine fans here?

A good friend of mine runs an Iron & Wine fansite at www.passingafternoon.com. He got the idea to have the patrons of the forums pick a song of Iron & Wine's and do their own rendition of it. It's not for profit or notoriety or anything, just to collect some "fan art" from the forum patrons. He may even corner Sam at one of their shows and give him an EP or LP or whatever for chuckles.

If you're a fan and have time to make a lo-fi cover of an already lo-fi artist, come on by the forums there and take a crack at it. I don't think that anybody there has any home-recording prowess in the least, so there's no reason to be shy!

Heck, it may even be a good opportunity to practice mixing and mastering other people's submissions since I don't think anybody there has any tools short of a mic and a PC.

This project is actually taking off pretty well. Some good talent has shown up at the site and laid down some great covers.

I'm actually going to dust off my recording gear and get in on it myself.

It's still not too late if any of you care!

Tad, listening to their cover of Cowgirl in the Sand right now. I gotta wonder why I've never heard them before. It's a lover version and the recording isnt the best but it is a very good take on the tune for sure.

I didn't find the link to what you were talking about but I will look a little harder later. I gotta listen to more of their stuff, having heard that cover makes me wanna hear more.

Yeah that band has really taken off lately. Sam Beam has made huge strides in an already talented direction. Check out the EPs Woman King and In The Reins (with Calexico). Beautiful stuff!

Yeah Sam sports that bushy beard. Makes him look a lot like Will Oldham.

He's just one of those guys that I want to be. I wish that I was a college professor that decided to record some songs on a 4-track in my living room, and then suddenly was propelled into near-stardom.

That guy is going to die a rich man, after a long life of making music that makes every fan of the genre say "damn. I wish I'd thought of that".

I'm still working on my rendition of one of his songs, but I've been fighting some demons lately that've left me a little lacking in motivation.

On the bright side, this thread did generate at least one submission on pa.com. And hopefully it introduces a person or two to I&W's music.

Cheers fellas.

Sweet, glad to hear. It's good to see them get some attention.

I'm doing "The Rooster Moans" off of the album "The Creek Drank The Cradle". Not my favorite song from the album, but the one that I thought I could take in a new direction without making it goofy. Well, maybe mine is goofy but its mine anyways :)

Yikes, the tribute album has ramped up a notch now. Turns out that if Aarvid at passingafternoon.com can get this CD mailed out on Monday, then a fellow at SubPop records will personally hand-deliver the CD to Sam himself in a couple of weeks. How's that for a cool turn for the better?

Unfortunately, I'm not even started on mine yet. I have to arrange, perform, record, mix, and master my contribution in the next 2 days. So you'll end up hearing mine sooner rather than later.

Anybody else? Last chance!

Well, it looks like its all finished. It'll be interesting to see if Sam actually gets a hold of this.

Tad, let me know if and when this CD goes up for sale. I would like to get a copy for sure. I listened to some of the mp3 so far, good stuff indeed.

Nice version you did by the way. Intro is great and then you get it going nicely. I will have to listen to the others soon as the few and yours were very well done.
