ok i just got my new eurorck ub1204 mixer and sm57 mic. i am very new to recording and i have the mic plugged into the first channel and the mixer is on. now i am using audacity to record at the moment and the input on it is set to stereo mix. but i must use the soundcard that came with my computer at the moment until i can afford a new one, so please bear with me. i have an adapter that goes from the two 1/4" outs on the mixer to a 1/8" stereo out to go to the computer. i have tried every one of the inputs on the soundcard but when i press record in audacity nothing records. can someone please help me?? thank you for any replies..

are you getting output from your speakers? Are you seeing level in any LED meters in your sound card control panel or anything (if you have any)? Are you going in the line in? Are meters showing sound on you mixer? Do you have that channel assigned to the outputs that are going into the computer?

actually i just looked on the mixer and there are a bunch of led's above the main mix faders, are they supposed to light up when i play, because they aren't? also does my mic need to have phantom power turned on, it didn't say anything about it in the manual?
thank you for your help this is all just like so much to figure out at once.

edit: also i really am not sure how to assign the channels and whatnot, i really couldn't understand much of what was in the manual for my mixer.

SM 57 need no phantom power and yes, those LED's should light...there should be little buttons next to each channel fader that assign that channel to different outs...make sure it's going to the mains (or whichever outs you are sending to the card).

also, to add to what dB mentioned, sometimes in windows, the control panel for volume has the line-in disabled as a recording source. You'd want to use the line-in, not the mic in on the computer, btw.

Activate the line-in, and you should be seeing level in a recording meter in the windows volume applet, as well as in your recording software. Once enabled, the line-in should be always active.

Also, turn off any other recording input options in the windows volume / sound applet. No need to listen for any more noise than you need to.

If the volume system tray icon is not preset, then go to control panel -> sounds -> click on the audio tab -> click the Default Playback volume -> Click on Options -> Properties -> then click on Recording -> Then OK. This should give you the volumes and enabling checkboxes for your input devices. Check line in, all others should be unchecked.

well i don't see any buttons next to the faders, but in one section i see a label that says source and has three buttons, tape, alt 3-4, and main mix. which one should be depressed? the three outputs of the mixer are control room out, alt 3-4, and main and i am going through alt 3-4 if that helps. to your other question i really don't know which input on the sound card to go through, there are 5 1/8" inputs, none of them are labeled they just have little drawings next to them. i used to have a computer mic plugged into one of them, should i use that one?

yeah, thats the buttons...

If you are going out 3-4 to the sound card, then depress the 3-4 button to assign the output to those outs so they can go to the card.

Don't use the mic input, use the line input...3 are likely outputs for surround sound speakers, then one line input and one mic input...you need the line input...I dunno which one it would be though...there is a color code standard for the jack, but I dunno what they are. I think black, green and yellowish are speaker outs, not sure...

ok i found the line in and i am plugged into that. i did what pjk said and disabled all the other inputs except for line-in. and i also pressed in the alt 3-4 button but when i press record nothing happens on the led's or the monitor in audacity.

OK, is the 3 and 4 fader up?

The LED's on that model (looking at a pic now) it appears the LED's are likely only for the mains, not sure though, so they may not show any activity...
