Help! My Tracks are Bleeding!

'Sup everyone,

I've got a rather annoying problem. I've been doing home recording with an old computer (400 Mhz Celeron) and a really old 16-bit sound card, using Cool Edit Pro 1.0 software (I know, it's really old, but I don't have much motivation to buy new software because this works really well). Anyway, this has worked fine, but I just got a new computer: a Compaq Presario (2.4 Ghz Athlon 64 w/ 512 MB of RAM) with a SoundBlaster Live! 24-bit card. I know that this isn't the preferred card for a "pro" setup, but I'm not looking to set the world on fire, I just want to get some good multitrack recordings. Anyway, my problem is this: Whenever I try to record something with my mic (Shure SM 57), all of the previously recorded tracks bleed onto new track at an incredibly high volume. At first I figured that the mic was picking up the sound from my cans (a nice set of Sennheiser isolation headphones), but I turned off all the speaker output and recorded again with the same result. Even with everything (mic & speakers) unplugged it still replicates the original tracks on the new track. I've checked to make sure that everything is plugged into the right places, and I've played around with all of the settings for the soundcard and in Cool Edit Pro. Any ideas?

Go into the windows recording mixer and select line-in or mic for your input (which ever your using for input). Right now it's probably set for "What you hear" which is the default.

I'm not sure if I found what you were describing exactly, but I found an option that says "Do not monitor" for the mic input and line input. I checked it and now everything's fine. Thanks for getting me pointed in the right direction. You're my hero.
