Ok, I am very new to recording and i just got some new equipment, i got a behringer UB1204-Pro Mixer and a shure sm-57. Now on the mixer i have three out puts: control room out, alt 3-4 out, and main out. which one of these would i use to direct record to my computer soundcard? Also my soundcard is not very expensive it is a soundblaster i believe so please do not suggest getting a new one as at the moment i can't afford one. It has like 5 inputs, all of them are 1/8", so which one of these would i plug into and also what kind of adapter would i need to go to my mixer? thanks for your time

look at the diagram..."sub outs" are your 3/4 outputs...I couldn't say it any better than that.

MAINS TO THE SPEAKERS

SUBS TO THE LINE IN

...come on dude, meet me half-way here, look at the diagram.

edit:
sorry dude, I just get very frustrated when people are not even appearing to try, just want answers handed to them...and this seriously looks like that.

sorry im just really new to this. see i haven't got monitors yet im just going to monitor with the computer speakers until i can get some. so in that case would i still use the 3-4 outs to go to the computer?

p.s. i have researched this alot it may seem like i am not trying to understand, but i have read manuals, searched this website, and i had already seen that diagram but i didn't understand it so sorry to frustrate you if i did dude. anyways thanks for your help

thats fine, the computer speakers, monitors, whatever...instead of sending the line outs back to the mixer, then just send them to the computer speakers and use any mixer out you want to go to the sound card...using the sub outs is a good habit to get into though...

ok i see i was just afraid i might fry my soundcard if i used the wrong output so i wanted to be extra careful but i got it now. thanks

well see i didn't know they were line level i thought the main out was somehow powered because it went to the speakers...

any line-output from the mixer shouldn't damage anything...

one more thing though, the sub outs and control room outs have 1/4 jacks and the main outs are XLR and i believe they are all stereo. so why would the main jacks be different than the others?

main outs are a balanced signal, sometimes making much longer cable runs than the other outs so they make them the bigger, balanced outputs.
