Collaboration with a VS880 and VS1824CD

Hello, new to this site, but I am encouraged by all of the valuable information and good ideas here.

I recently decided to put some time back into music again. I have a close friend with ZERO equipment and a nearly zero budget. I would like to give him my old VS880 to use so we can collaborate on some projects, long distance style.

I have a VS1824CD and I know I can export songs in a format the VS880 can use. My friend knows little about recording and doesn't have much interest in this aspect of making music so I really just need for him to be able to record some clean tracks for me to introduce into the "real" project file.

I *think* the following approach will work:
1. on the VS1824, mix down current project to stereo tracks on 7 and 8.
2. create a new song with just these 2 tracks.
3. export this stereo version to VS880 format.
4. burn project file to CD.
5. post the data files on my server for download.
6. He would download and put on a formatted zip disk.
7. put zip disk in zip drive connected to VS880, load the song (most likely I'd have him copy to HD rather than work from the zip)
8. add new track(s), save it
9. put zip disk back in his computer and upload files to my server.
10. I burn onto CD
11. import into a new vs1824 project and then copy my friend's tracks to the real project file.

That is a lot of steps, but most are easy and it beats waiting on media via the mail. Has anyone here done this? Have any advice on how to simplify this process?

I used to put my VS880 projects onto my computer and then burn onto a CD for archiving so I know it can be done. I do remember a Win95 registry hack to prevent windows from screwing up the Roland disk format on the zip disks. Is this necessary still with Win2K or XP?

Thanks!

wow cool!!! i record this way ALL the time....just never with the rolands....the FUNNY thing is, i just realized i tracked the EP i'm dooin' now on a VS2480, which means i've worked on every VS seres recorder EXCEPT the one's you're using!!! gotta love the irony! put i am pretty comfortable with their programming.

from what you say, as long as your friend has a zip drive on his computer AND the format issues don't exist, then this would be EXACTLY the method i'd use in your situation. i can say you can most definately export to a .wav file as long as both of your projects are set to the same sample rate and bit depth. which takes care of some of the hassle of dealin' with .rld (or what ever the roland file type would be) but really THAT isn't much of a hassle either....haha try it youself and see if it works....lemme know how it goes.

Uploading & downloading wav files over the internet, via a dial-up connection may take as long as snail mail... Also, your friend gaining access to your site for download is easy, him gaining access to upload may be a problem with some services... That said, that aspect of the collaboration can and does work. My brother & I have traded a few things (we both have DSL), nothing spectacular, just ideas to bounce around the noggin'... better than using a telephone for three & four hours at a crack lol lol lol...

The server is my server, so I created a file upload page for him so he can just use his browser. These WILL take some time to upload, but he will only be sending me the stereo scratch mix plus his new track(s). He has cable so 1-2 hours ought to transfer 4 tracks of 5 minutes uncompressed (44.1K, 16 bit). A couple hours is NOTHING like waiting 2 or 3 days for some magnetic media that *may* still work.

I am fairly confident that this process will work fine. My biggest concern is the windows/roland format issue. Has anyone used Windows XP to read a roland formatted zip disk? In the win95 and 98 days you had to run a registry updater tool so windows wouldn't screw up the formatting.

I don't have another zip drive to test this with, just the scsi drive connected to the VS880. I also don't have a WinXP computer at home. The only investment I am asking him to make is a USB zip drive. I'd just like to know what's involved so I can tell him EXACTLY what to do. He isn't a technical person at all, just a songwriter ;-)

If he needs to run this registry hack first, no big deal. But I don't want to tell him to run a registry update program designed for Win95 on his WinXP machine unless I know it works. I wasn't able to dig up anything recent on the internet about this format corruption issue. Just info about older operating systems. Anyone out there still using their computer to store their VS880 project files?
