hello
any tips for recording drums without a compressor/limiter. im going to pan and mix the drums in my mixer and then make a 2 track stereo on my GNX4

Make sure you set your levels so that you don't get any clicks or pops. Other than that your should be good.

Just be careful that the mix with the snare and kick especially are just right. This can be tough to do, often a kick for instance will sound great in a sub-mix but won't be present enough in the final one. Be aware of what else is going on the track, if it's distorted guitars you might want to push the kick and snare out a little more so they don't get lost at a lower level and the cymbals don't take over at a higher level, whereas with acoustic music for instance this isn't the case. It's hard to give exact advice when you don't know what the tune or style of music is, but that's a start, like i say, just be aware of the overall sound you're after and try to put the drums in context. Maybe record a little bit of drums and then play one of the main instruments over the top just to see how it fits sonically and level-wise.

If at all possible, do the drums to 3 tracks: Left, Right & Kick, but I'm guessing you only have two inputs, which makes that tough... However, you could do one track kick, one track overheads/everything-else (thru a sub-mixer) and then "simulate" a stereo mix by doubling (copying) the "overhead" track after-the-fact.??? That way, you retain control of your kick...

Or get crazy/insane and do what I saw one guy try: Over-dub the "parts" seperately. He used the original drum tracks as sort-of scratch tracks, went back and over-dubbed just the kick, then the snare, then tried the toms (didn't work near as well), and mixed those parts in with the original drum tracks. Didn't turn out too bad... but the time involved - Yikes!!!

well i have 8 mic inputs into MY MIXER
and my mixer has two line outs
and my recorder has two line ins lol
