I don't know much about ADAT or Laptop, but I do know that there are little cards and programs which run into your USB port... probably doesn't help much

There is a can of worms I gave up on to be honest. There are a number of A/D interfaces out there that will work with a labtop if you are looking to record directly into the labtop. I guess this is not the case as you use an ADAT LX20. Here are some considerations that I found. There are SPDIF audio interfaces out there for USB, however all USB stuff so far is limited to 4 channels. I think it's a bandwith limitation, not sure. Firewire gives you pretty much unlimited channel I/O however it is a bit pricey. I finally broke down and bought an ADAT HD24. That was pricey too! No getting away from it per my findings. The kicker with the ADAT HD24 is that it has a ethernet T10 connection and with a real inexpensive ethernet PC Card you can download the WAV files directly into the labtop. Import them into your favorite mixing software and mix and master on the go! I racked my ADAT and take it to gigs etc. Bring it home and download it to puter and mix. Or if I need an on site mix I bring the labtop and do the same. Wish I had better news but from what I have priced the going cost is about $200 / channel of audio I/O regardless of approach. DbMaster mentioned Terratec in another thread which is a little less expensive but mostly PC card stuff.

Good Luck! Decisions....decisions!

I think you are talking about the software editing program for the ADAT. If indeed that is the case, you can istall that into your laptop no problem. You will just need to get an interface that will connect your laptop to the ADAT's litepipe.

Ok,

The tape based machines are analog out and ADAT (propritary) light-pipe. Full eight channel light dump. Hence ADAT edit to decode it on the receiving end. On the Hard Drive units ADAT has added a 10-Base-T I/O which works as on FPT server. They dual record everything in .wav and .aiff files to accomidate both PC and MAC worlds.

And there is a lightpipe to digital converter out there, I just can't remember who make's it. It does several format conversion's of digital. It's like the swiss army knife of the digital interface converter's.
