it's a very blurry line.
i've heard (or read) alot of people saying derogatory things twards a group/class/generalization of these people called "scenesters"....this is a somewhat new word to me but i think i get the jist of it.
i think it's safe to say i was one of these people for some time of my life....as i understand it, scenesters are people that go to alotta local shows mostly because that's what everyone else in the 'scene' is dooin'
well what is a 'local music scene'?
i see it as a large network of people that work WITH or AGAINST eachother. this includes fans that buy merch, bands/dj's/other entertainers and artists, their managment, promoters, record lables, studios, printing and duplication houses, local media like printed, radio, or even TV...basicaly everything associated with this industry. i'm not sayin' just the bigshots here, this also includes smalll scale operations equally aswell.
so how does one get into this? simple
start small...baby steps ect.
and use EVERY opportuinity to network....
here's a funny story, yesterday me and a certain drummer from a certain band that i am trying to help develop were in a mall buying some decor for the practice room, the casheer asked us if we'd like some stickey puddy stuff for the posters, and we said "i don't think it'd be good for carpet" and, you know how when you make a certain noize a dog will tilt it's head sideways in the most confused way? that's the face he made, jason, i mean the drummer said "it's a practice space for a band" naturally the casheer asks what band, we got the usual "oh never heard of ya" but the other employee (female) said "oh, i have"
this drummer smiled and said "cool" and we left....no plug of the show next week, no "check our website", not anything.....
i proceeded to beat his head with the rolled posters. that was a small but positive step in getting his bands name out, and he missed it....i'm not gonna hold his hand and do it for him, but damn....
anyway, back to my question, why is beein' a scenester bad?
