that's a good candidate for the DNS 'black hole' treatment. Nicely, the article gave their server IP address. Good show.

yep.

I do, however disagree with the "it's very clever" comment that was quoted in the article, as it's not clever at all, it's typical affiliate style marketing...

I dont get why sites would WANT popups of any kind anymore... all people do is block them, close them, exc. Noone even clicks on them anymore.

don't do much user studies of internet users do ya? If ya did, you'd be AMAZED how many people still have no idea how to block popups and the types of ads and marketing schemes still work...don't overestimate the knowledge of the common internet user. I spend a lot of time studying this type of topic, and I'll tell ya, it's scary.

There are people still running IE 3 for cryin out loud...

Bottom line is that if people were not still making a ton of money off this stuff, it wouldn't happen. Spam still sells loads of drugs and illegal software, pops still generate money, though, the last study I read indicates that the most effective ad is currently the kind that takes up the whole page in your browser for a few seconds and then automatically forwards to the page you actually tried to click thru to. Those ads are common on someof the bigger news sites and Yahoo Groups...as well as other places.

There is a science of human action/reaction to internet advertising, and it works...plus, the average internet user just isn't that savy...I am amazed on a dialy basis how stupid people are...still handing over bank numbers to people from "PayPal" that need to verify their accounts, or to a "high ranking official" in Nigeria that needs their bank account to launder millions of dollars...it's insane, but people, some very educated people, fall for this stuff.
