is the tascam US122 a better alternative to an analogue mixer? since i would do all major mixing via PC, would the tascam be a better choice sound quality wise when mic-ing amps and vocals etc, Thanks alot

P.S, also thoughts on the Tascam US122 compared to the M-Audio Fast Track USB Computer Recording Interface and M-Audio MobilePre USB would be very useful and much appreciated, thanks alot

I have one, I'm liking it alot, but I was using a mixer before (house fire) so I'm kinda spoiled by that. check my profile for my gear.

That said, it seems to work well. I'm limited to two channels, but have used them both to record into n-track a few times and everything seems to work quite well. I believe it's 24bit, 96khz so the audio will be in good shape. Getting the A/D away from the PC is always good as well. It has a direct monitor so your monitoring solution would be mostly done for you as well. I'd recommend one.

Now, a mixer will do things that the 122 can't, like a little more flexibility in routing, but probably not much, compared to a small mixer. So compared to a small mixer, you may be close enough.

Now the bad news: I did a lot of looking around for info on the 122, harmony-central has lots of reviews on it. I'd say half of the reviews advise against the device, due to it not working after a little use. I'm guessing the quality control at tascam for the 122 is quite lacking. Anyhow, bunches of other people on there say they love it, and it's been working great. I've had good luck with mine (about 4 months now) and am very happy with the purchase (brand new on ebay, 160$). I've had 2 times where the computer can't seem to find the driver association, but XP re-connects the drivers to the device automatically, so it's a 30 second wait. I'm guessing that if you've a new PC with XP, then it will probably work well. The thing may not play well with other older boards, chipsets, etc.

hope that helps.
