the mix on 'dive'

i was listening to nirvana's song "dive" this afternoon. anyone familiar with that one? anyone listen to it recently? that song has a kind of 'big' sound, but i noticed the EQ'ing was weird. i'm trying to figure out whats goin on in that song, in hopes of, you know, getting a little better at mixing myself. because let's face it, after two or three years i'm still nowhere near competent.

it seemed to me that the guitar sound was cut deeply in the mids, and there was a bassier sound to it. like the soldano model on the POD, or possibly something like a mesa boogies triple rec. i realized 'hey, ive tried to use that sound before too and it never quite works out in a mix for me.' so i started to wonder why it works on that song and i was thinking maybe its because the drums are carrying a lot of highs, and if i remember right, theyre kind of loud themselves. is that a dumb thought? maybe my POD just sucks. oh wait, it does: i use it just for convenience.

i'm 99.999% sure they miked real amps for that sound...as for the mixing, i can't say i've heard it (although i'm sure i have at one point or another).

good luck

I gave it a listen, and nothing jumps out at me other than the guitars are pretty mid-scooped. They definitely sound double or triple tracked.

I dug up this page that somebody put together, it outlines the gear that Kurt used. Although Incesticide seems to be a mystery.

I know, for such an anti-hero on guitar, a lot of consideration went into his rig, eh?

ill check out that link, thanks.

yeah, of course it's real miked amps. nirvana never did anything different, other than running straight into the board sometimes.

mid-scooped and triple tracked. sounds good. i was wondering why my ear accepted it because taken in isolation, those guitar sounds seem like they would sound hollow. i guess all the additional frequencies in the other instruments fill it all out.
