American "false" Idol?

What do you guys think about American Idol? I know it's karaoke and that America is pretty stupid about good music, but do you guys think it's a good opportunity for people or a huge waste of time?

Personally, I have never watched until this season and I only watch now because of the rocker Bo Bice. It's cheesy, yes. But I think a lot of these contestants would never get the chance to sing in front of millions of people and any publicity is good publicity. Even for William Hung. Plus, some of the people voted off get contracts later on.
Of course, the actual American Idol contract is full of crappy stuff (its like 100 years long, you can only work with certain producers etc.).
Anyway, what do you guys think?

My wife and I have watched it on and off since it started. It's the most fun at the bigenning watching the sucky people that think they rock the house.

Toward the end they are all pretty good and some just pick the wrong song or have an off night, which everyone is entitled to, I bet even Simon Cowell is wrong now and then.

Over all, I think it's goodentertainment, and most all of the singers are good when they get down to 50 or so people, then they get weeded out as they find some are only good in their genre or whatever.

Basically, for me it's just fun...and yeah, Bo Bice is really good.

im not into singing all that much, im into neil young, the residents, tom waits, primus and other unique vocal stuff which would be consider crap by the american idol standards but its beautiful to me.. lol! not that i dont appreciate a nice voice but its way over-rated. Im more into the musicians and the lyrics sortof what king crimson does as band!! but straight singing, i dont get? id rather hear someone fart the national anthem vs. someone doing that over exaggerated wooo ewww eeee oww soul b.s. i want them to come out with american prog band idol, or american shred guitarist idol. that would be worth watching.

I must admit, the wife watches this and watched Pop Idol (which started it all off all that time ago)...she also watched "Popstars" which if I remember rightly, was first?? I canny mind...

I cant be bothered with it much to be honest. I hate the folk who are crap and they are crap but they insist on arguing, crying etc or just plainly taking nae advice...its clear when someone just cant sing yet they still insist they are the next best thing.

Taht said, its all fun I guess...just pisses me off to hear the talentless ones who think they have talent. Simon Cowell - I dont like him but I like his honesty...nae bs which I like..just tell it how it is man..thats the way it should be.

On the US Idol, I see no point in Paula Abduls presence - she pretty much loves everyone!!! Pointless...

Anyways, my tuppenceworth.

Yeah, now the alligations of Paula sleeping with that Cory dude (off Season 2). She's okay to be on there but she has been trouble. Simon doesn't get along with her (least that is the drama they let us see), she had problems with pills, and now this.

Oh yeah, by the way...I watch a little of it with my fiance ;)

Paula does not love everybody, she does state when she does not, the big thing I like about her (outside of purely physical ones) is that she is optomistic. She is not insulting and rude, nor is Randy Jackson, Paula always tries to give good advice in a positive light. That said I have also heard her say "uuuuhhh, singing isn't for you", very directly and plainly. She is also a very, very accomplished dancer and choreographer and I am assuming is there partly as eyecandy but alot for the skill of choregraphy, cuz face it, showmanship in pop music needs a lot of it.

Simon may be honest, but, brutally honest is unnecessary, he is so over insulting and over arrogant, he is just a jerk. Why he thinks he is the greatest thing in the world I don't get.

I like Randy's disposition best, good solid advice, honest, but not rude or arrogant...

Cory's claims of sleeping with Paula are bogus...it's been a year or two, he now has a book and an album coming out so he chooses now to come out with the allegations...come on people...also remember he has a criminal record already as well for beating his sister...so he obviously has issues...I don't believe Cory one bit, even remember the season he was on? He is about nothing more than himself.

I totally agree dB. He is cashing in right now. That special lagged to fill up a hour. It was pitful. After people didn't believe, he goes to say "Oh yeah, I know she has a mark on her body that no one else knows about...." Shut up dude. You probably were looking at her when she bent over or something. Why didn't you share that in the interview? What a loser....

I put him on the same list as Britney Spear's husband. Needs to get a job list.

I watched Idol for the first time last night. Yeah, those cats can sing. I found myself mildly entertained. Like someone said above, it's really just like Karaoke...very GOOD Karaoke. They know all the moves and the looks and everything. Reminded me a lot of Star Search with Ed MacMahon (remember the spokesmodels?)

I guess time will tell if any of those winners will actually become American idols. It takes a lot more than a great voice and a pretty face to be an idol.

Bob Dylan is one (my) American idol...and he's as ugly as a fencepost and can't sing a lick!

Aye..agreed Jim. Dylan is a good songwritter - but he cant sing and is ugly.

However, his songs are what makes him the legend he is. I just wished I hadnt paid to find that out - saw him a few years ago...man, a strangled cat he is...but, as I say, LEGENDARY songwritter.

I look at Dylan as more of a storyteller.

None of the American Idols will stand that kind of a test of time. They will do well and get rich in the short term, for that, I say good for them, but none of them will become legends to any capacity.

Modern pop music and pop culture as a whole isn't into long term, it lives for the now. Immediate gratification and reward, what is said tomorrow they'll worry about tomorrow.

dB...you are exactly correct. I guess that an idol is nothing more than an object of (false?) worship. Makes it a very fitting title for the show.

Not to be confused with "American Icon"...now that would be a show that I would watch!

Finally, someone gets it!

:-D

The show should be called "The next person to be on the cover of all the teen magazines be the object of all teens affections and admirations...for a week".

For the most part I would agree that the fame is only short turn but I appear to being proved wrong though. Somehow, Kelly Clarkson is still a success and I think if she can do well with her latest album then she may just be here for awhile.

One thing for sure, American Idol gets a lot of viewers so they must be doing something right.

I just don't agree with the fact that the contestants don't have to experience the hard knocks of working with a band and the struggles and starvation that go along with it before they become famous.

Hmmm, well, Kelly won like 3 years ago (I think) I still don't consider that very long...she has about 17 years to go...minimum...which will never happen.

And who said they haven't had hard knocks, some of the contestants have been in bands, choirs and other things. Even if not, it's not like having the hard knocks makes you a better singer, just a more jaded one. They saw and opportunity and seized it...nothing wrong with that.

I saw a Kelly Clarkson video on VH1 the other day. It was a stripped-down acoustic version of her song "Since You've Been Gone". It was very good. Her singing wasn't spot on, but it was full of emotion and really fit the music.

That being said, I don't think we'll hear much from her anymore. There will always be new American Idols coming along to take her place.
