which mode gives that arabian sound???

I'd say Phrygian. Its a very Eastern sounding scale.

There are probably some other scales that fit the bill also.

try playing around with this:

1 and flat 2, the first two notes of the phrygian mode.

jump up to the regular ol' third.

then add 4, 5, and flat 6

then skip from the flat 6 up to the seventh. this is a key aspect of that arabian sound. it comes out of the harmonic minor scale, to have a full minor third jump at the end like that there.

then the octave.

in the key of c this would be:

c, c#, e, f, g, g#, b, c

The Phrygian scale is more of a spanish type scale.

the mode itself may be. that flat second is the signature phrygian sound, but i think it also appears in arabian scales. i mean, it must!

that scale above is my own hybrid invention! try it out! i think that 3 half-step jump at the end is brilliant and crucial to the 'arabian' sound!

w00t! i created the byzantine scale completely by accident! it is identical to the gypsy scale a few scales down! they're there on the second link there! w00t!

hahah awsome forty!, these scales sound so "sitarish" on my bass....gonna mess with them tonight.
