I was wondering if any one on here has experience with learning to sing vocal harmony. I'm a singer songwriter and I primarily record solo but occasionally work with a friend. I can sing passably but have never really been able to "hear" the harmony parts. I was looking at some training cds to practice with but I first wanted to see if anyone had used them or had any other methods they had tried. Thanks.

May 09, 2005 12:21 pm i am no singer by any means, but i can match pitch pretty well...i was always curious about harmonies....i half assed learned by singing scales in music school....we'd hafta do major minor in random keys...picture a room full of guitar players and DRUMERS tryin' to sing!! it was horrid but we all truged through. get on a keyboard or guitar and play a major scale and sing the numbers of the notes.... ie: key of C
-----ahem-----
NOTE SING
C 1
D 2
E 3
F 4
G 5
A 6
B 7
C 1
practice that until you can sing the next note in the scale before you play it....then try gooin' "1,3,2,4,3,5,4,6,5,7,6,1"....acending and decending....after a month or two, you'll be able to grab notes in melody's of song's you're listening to. i started singing counter melodies by singing acending notes from the scale instead of singing right along with the song. (do this alone) perfect 4ths and 5ths are easiest to start with....or if the song on the radio or whatever already has backups, sing those instead. practice practice practice....i used to sing to the ice machine hum at work...mad the motor my "1" and just harmonized to that, one steady droaning tone is good to practice to. and if i can learn to ANYBODY can!

May 09, 2005 01:52 pm That looks cool. Thanks for posting it. I'll give it a shot.
I can hear the harmony when someone else is singing... my problem is that I can't "hear" it when it's not there. I also sometimes have a hard time copying a harmony part in a song because I can't isolate it in my head. These CDs I've looked at separate the parts (sometimes with balance... sometimes by separating them completely) so that you can focus in on them better. I may give both a shot.
