I am recording with a kick mic (CAD ...), a snare mic (SM57) two overheads (large diaphram condensers). I am relatively comfortable with mic placement, but I am rather confused on whether or not the send sequence matters. I have this into inputs 1-4, respectively, and I have Aux Send headed out to (my option of PreSonus TubePre, Behringer Autocom Pro). Would the preamp really doing anything but catching noise on the auxiliary loop? Also, I'm having a hard time getting that really dry and close, but comfortable small-soft-room sound on the drums. My music is rather mellow...shifted country/rock. Is there a particularly great way of tuning the snare and toms to get that real gutty- "Green Eyed Lady" type of feel to the drums?

Okay, so you have the 4 mics plugged into 1-4? I'm guessing that is a soundboard of some sort with mic cords going from each mic to the board. If so, you are already using a preamp. Each mic channel on your board is it's own preamp. Might not be as good as the TubePre, that's why they make the single ones like that. I would leave it as you have it. How many aux sends do you have? Hopefully 4, that way you can record them all seperate. If not, you can manage. Now, the compressor (Behringer Autocom Pro) should go into your inserts if you have them for each channel. Then, the Aux sends going to your soundcard to your computer. Hope that makes sense!

i'd use the tube pre and compressor (if you're comfortable tracking with it) on the kick and set the mixers preamp gain to unity (0db).

if you have a second pre, then i'd put them on the overheads. also make sure your mixers phantom power is on for the overheads.
