Speaker as a mic???

I recently read an article in my Modern Drummer about home recording drums. The author of the article suggested to "Try wiring a mic cable to the speaker leads". When I first heard this I thought of the Yamaha Subkick, which is essentially the same thing. I think that all that I need to do is cut off the female part of the mic cable, and then wire the speaker leads to the mic cable. If anyone has tried this before, help would be greatly appreciated; I dont want to cut up a mic cable if it wont work. Thanks a lot.

yes, I used two MB Quart 8" coaxial speakers, and got suprisingly good sound. For the kick, I still prefer to use the MB due to its extremely low freq response.

as far as how to wire it... Go to radio shack and buy a 25' "mic extension" cable for $6.99. Cut the female plug off and strip the rubber back to expose the wires. The one in the center of the cable is attached to the + terminal of the speaker, and the outside cable is connected to the - terminal of the speaker.

I've seen an NS10 used as a kick mic, good bass tone to it, but not much sound of the actual drum, so a second mic would've been a good idea.

I think i said this on that other thread dB mentioned.

That is the beauty of using a full range speaker such as the MBQ 8" coax... You already ARE micing it with two mics, it picks up EVERYTHING.

I would like to do this as I have 1/2 of a Pioneer speaker set and it would work perfectly (I think).

I have a couple questions (I couldn't find the other thread that is being referenced), ZX6R1033 refers to an extension cable. Is this a TRS cable or XLR? If it is XLR what do you do with the third wire?
...and does the speaker/mic have to run through a pre-amp? I'm guessing that it does and this is why I need XLR as I only have XLR on my pre-amp.

Well now that its been a while and ive gotten it all set up, this is how im doing it...I got the mic extension cable like he said. www.radioshack.com/produc...ct%5Fid=42-2379 Theres the link. As far as the preamp, I have it running into line in and it works fine for some reason... Good luck. Josh.

Excellent 'cause I already have the cable that you mentioned and I can sacrifice it. I'm hoping to be able to plug it in directly into my Delta 44. Thanks

I'd think that you're going to need some sort of preamp before plugging it in to your Delta card. I can't imagine that the speaker/mic would output a line level signal.

Ya, thats my thoughts too but I'll try first. If it doesn't work then I'll need a TRS->XLR adapter (if there is such a thing)

"I was suprised at first too...but all i know is that I plug the TRS into the line in on my mixer and i can hear it when I play it back on the computer."

That's because you're most likely running through your mixer's preamp.

In my Yamaha 16/4 MG the the TRS input Im putting it into says "line". Im pretty sure that means no preamp am I right?

Yes, that's correct. But you still can add gain to the signal with the channel gain, the bus gain, and the master gain if I'm thinking correctly.

I have a mixer that I could run it through but how could you get a speaker "hotter" My TRS connections on my mixer are not pre-amp'd. Can I somehow wire it XLR so I can run it through a pre-amp? I only have XLR pre-amps. Is it only a matter of wiring a XLR to the end of a cable and hooking an unfinished end to the speaker and ignore the ground?

OK let's recap... The cable I used is a TS cable... 1/4" plug. You NEED a preamp of some sort, so running it directly into the Delta44 is not an option. The sound you get will depend on the quality of the speakers you use... just like the sound from a mic depends on the quality of the mic.

does it work for real?! Because my Mic is very crappy!!

Yes, it works for real. Your speaker/mic will be very crappy if you are using a crappy speaker though... so unless you have a set of high-end car audio speakers kicking around somewhere, this is NOT a cheap alternative.

Is it ok to wire it with an XLR cable. If so, what do I do with the ground wire?

I still need to find out the answer to the above post. I understand that all I would have to do is chop the end off of a TS cable and attach the other end to the speaker.

...but how do I wire for XLR since it has 3 wires. Do I just omit the ground wire or do I ground it to the speaker?? I kind of need to know this in advance because it means sacrificing a XLR cable and I would like to know if it can be done first. I need to go to XLR to be able to put it through a pre-amp.

Thanks

I think you'd just leave the ground unsoldered. make sure to turn phantom power off on the preamp though.
