how solid is solidstate?

Hello all, I've got a Crate GX1200H guitar amp that I believe is solidstate that I need to take with me to the other side of the world... well, from the US to Turkey. I had the bright idea of packing it into a bag and checking it, but then there are the horror stories of checked baggage handling. I don't think anyone here would enjoy the idea of their equipment being dropped 20 feet onto asphalt, no matter how much padding is packed around it. Gives me chills. So just how solid is a solidstate head? Anyone ever break one?

I believe there are places on the airport where you can check in "special luggage" or something like that... It's supposed to take better care for yur luggage

I've been a supervisor at an air port in the past and i can say the baggage tossers are not too bad(i've been one of em) . I took my electric guitar in a padded gig bag with me to Iraq, and it has survived, I think your crate will be ok . Just don't put a fragile sticker on it.

I was at the airport a few days ago waiting for my luggage on the belt, and was looking out the window watching the luggage being thrown on. Saw my guitar (with 6 fragile stickers on case) being thrown onto the belt. Was furious. Turned out there was a crack in the F-hole off my guitar

Yeah, I've flown myself as well, which is what prompted me to ask. I've researched a bunch and as far as I know, I can't put it in some kind of special handling. All I was wondering was... do any of you guys have an idea of wether or not this thing is gonna survive rough handling or not?

There is an airmail facility at the airport for excess luggage if i remember correctly. Maybe you could arrange for it to be sent in fragile packaging? I think its faster than normal passneger flights so it should get there before you.

your amp should be fine , i fly a lot and i mean a lot and i take a guitar with me ,(it's not amp) but to me my guitar is more fragile than a solid state amp. if you checked it in as excess baggage it'll still be loaded as the normal and it'll cost a bit. you can insure it as well but that'll cost you too. I know there are tones of horror stories about flying and laugage (i've lived a few) but I think your amp will be fine. This is comming from an ex-Passanger service supervisor that deals with both Mil air and civilain aircraft.

Thanks for the advice guys.. I'm here in Turkey and it's almost all good.. if could solicit your advice on one more thorny issue....

I've been to the best music stores around, and they're selling some Marshall cabs for around $600 - $700, and that's about it as far as I've seen.
How practical is it to build a speaker cab?

I think that the internet is probably full of schematics and diagrams on building your own speaker enclosures.

Are you just going to be using it as an extension cabinet for your Crate amp? Or do you mean that you're pricing Marshall combo amps and want to know about building your own?

With the proper tools you should be able to build your own, but not many people have good shop equipment just lying around the house.

Well, I'm not sure what you're asking, maybe my coffee hasn't kicked in yet... but what I mean is that I brought my amp, but not the speaker cab. It's not a combo amp, and the speaker cab would have been too big to pack. I figured that it would be less expensive to get a speaker cab than the whole stack. Thing is, since getting here, I've realsied that one speaker cab here can cost as much as a whole stack in the States.

Well, that's the background to the situation, but what I'm really wondering is if it's a very sensitive thing. I mean, I'm sure there are diagrams, but is it a realistic undertaking?
