S-1 Switching on Fender guitars

After about two months without a Telecaster I am already having separation anxiety, and it is clear that I have to buy another one. I'm intrigued by the S-1 Switching System that Fender has introduced on the American Deluxe Teles. Does anyone out there have any experience with one of these babies? (Or one of the similarly fitted Strats?)

Let me know how you like it, and if you recommend it over the traditional fender pickups. Thanks!

Jim

anything is better than traditional fender pickups. anything that introduces THAT much humm into a signal is worthless. Peavy used the same pickups.

Oh man that guitar is at the absolute top of my wish list! I've wanted an American Deluxe Tele for a few years now. If you do get one, send me a full-size photo so that I can hug it and pet it.

Sorry, no help on the S1 but it does sound like a much more versatile switching system. And I think that the American Deluxe Series Fenders all have those SCN pickups that *should* be quieter than the hum-happy Fender single coils that we've all heard.

Yes, they do have the SCN pickups, and yes, I've read that they have similar noise-cancelling features to those of a humbucker. (Which, I didn't realize, is more or less two single coil pickups right next to each other.)

Jim, I have gotten to play the Tele. Although I am not a huge Fender fan, or at least Strat fan. I would prefer the Tele myself. The sound was fairly close to the traditional sound we all have grown to love over the years. And yes, I like the sound of a Strat, I just dont like the way they play.

But I do have to say the new electronics do make for a little wider stretch sound wise then the original. It was a little thicker, yet still twangy. I guess more presance due to less noise. I cant explain it, but I did honestly like the sound and adjustability better then before.

Thanks, Noize! I'm coming up to Mpls. for Easter weekend to spend some time with the family. I will definately pop in to the Guitar Center and give a couple of them a work out.

Hey Jim

I tried a new Tele last week and thought it was very cool.

I have a USA Fender Strat and its quite noisey, but less noise from the tele I did notice....dunno if its the same one but it was pricey so there is a good chance it was.

That said, I didnt buy - I spied a second hand USA Fender Strat for £250 so Im thinking I'll add that to ma collection...a nice sunburst it is. Sweeeeet...

I would refute the point made earlier tho that the single most famous guitar and one of the finest instruments ever made by mans fair hand is "anything that introduces THAT much humm into a signal is worthless. Peavy used the same pickups. " - sorry but I have an original Fender Strat and whilst it introduces noise (When distorted - NOT when clean i.e. thats only when its noticeable) it is still one of the finest guitar sounds ANYONE has ever made...Strats, Teles, Les Pauls, SG's and Rickys...all top geetars and love em all - characteristics is what I love of em all...

I agree, Coco. I love the sound of the original Tele and Strat pickups. I can't seem to find that sound anywhere else. It sounds like the new Tele pickups are even sweeter.

I hate it when I have my mind set on spending a big chunk of change, and NOBODY around here tries to talk me out of it! :-)

sympathetic lot, aren't we!

i'm on the lookout for a replacement tele as well. a 73 tele deluxe though. seems they're hard to find now-a-days, and quite spendy now that they've been re-issued.

well, I can't speak for everyone, but I can assure you I have not met a single coil yet I have liked. I did have a on '85 strat back in the day that sounded pretty darn good, but I think that was just sort of a "luck of the draw" type of thing...

I agree, I just don't like single coils. I'd much rather have the output and growl of a humbucker.

But on a Telecaster, however, I wouldn't have anything but a single coil. Humbuckers on a Tele are like tits on a bull...kinda pointless. If you're buying a Tele, its for the twang!

Noize...that sounds tempting, but my time will pretty much be taken up with family stuff. I'll be lucky if I can sneak out for an hour or two to hack around on one of those new Teles.

We'll have to get together soon, though.

Ya, now my weekend is booked as well. I have a guitarist coming in tommorrow to do 2 tracks. That will probably eat up several hours. And then its back to the grindstone.
