No volume control with M-Audio 2496 or midi playback?

Hey, I just got a M-Audio 2496, and have updated to the newest drivers. I can play music and other sounds, but I'm having a few problems.

One is that the volume control on the m-audio control pannel doesnt do anything. Even when I put the master volume on mute the sound still plays thru the speakers. The other is that i get no sound from midi files. When I play something that is in midi, no sound is played.

Anyone have any ideas?

I disabled my onboard audio card, so i have no idea how when the master volume on the m-audio control panel is on mute that sound can still be played. Thanks for any help.

Well I'll start with the last question first.

The 2496 does not have any onboard synth chip to speak of. so if you were used to using a SoundBlaster type card before which does have an onboard GM synth chip that is the problem with no sound from midi files. Midi is only data that tells a synth what notes to play, how long, how loud, etc. etc.

Now the first question. First, can you control the volume of the music or sounds with the app, such as media player? Meaning, if you use the volume control on whatever is playing the music, does that work?

If so, you need to check and make sure all your settings. Go to the Patchbay/router tab and make sure you have WavOut 1/2 selected. If you have H/W In 1/2 selected you wont have control of the wave out from your PC.

Gotcha about the midi part, ill just switch it back to microsofts synth.

Yes, I can control the level with a program, such as windows media player. I checked the patchbay/router and WavOut 1/2 was already selected. Anyone have any other ideas?

Well, if I am not mistaken now that I think about it. The mixer you are looking at is and input mixer, not an output mixer. the output is controlled by the app itself, meaning Media player, sonar or whatever.
