Hello there. I apoligize in advance because I am sure everybody here has heard it many a time but I am still confused by it. On a tascam porta 02, when mixing down to get all 4 tracks on one side of a casette, what kind of cable do I need to accomplish the task? And if somebody could explain the process yet again of how to combine tracks 3 and 4 with 1 and 2, that would be swell. Thanks so much.

Look at the back of the unit, I tried but couldn't find a pic of the back, see what type of jacks the outputs are, then, look at the back of the deck you are trying to record the mix too, they are likely RCA jacks. Get a cable to match the two ends...

you can't do it with just your porta 02, you need a "mixdown deck" send your main outputs out of the porta to that, press play, and record on the other deck....the very nature of 4 track recorders uses the left/right channel of each side (hence 4 tracks) of the tape to record and play at the same time...
