Quiet Mic's

Hey people

I'm plugging Shure SM58's and 57's into a fostex digital multitracker and the level of the mic's just seem incredibly quiet, I'm wondering if I need anything else to boost the volume, pre-amp or something. It is ok for vocals i suppose but with fingerpicking acoustic guitars it is too quiet.

Any help would be great

Does it have a switch to change from line to mic? Some of the older fostex digital fostex eight-tracks had a high/ medium/ low level switch, of which you'd need it on the high.

Hey

I'll check and see if theres any other buttons or anythin but could it be that im usin a line input with jack connector instead of XLR lead?

I don't think a compressor would help and I don't want to compress my sound. The model is VF08 i think, maybe its vf07 I'm not sure rite now.

Maybe its just my playin that is too quiet but thanks for your ideas people.

My old fostex only has jack ins for mics, thus the selector, i'd be surprised if yours doesn't even have that switch on at least two channels or XLR ins at the back, in which case use those.

Mine has jack inputs and XLR inputs, so is that gonna make any difference?

What are mic pre's? pre-amps? can you explain what they are and reccomend me some?

Thanks.

Mic pres bring the relatively small signal your mic gives out, in other words, it boosts the signal. I personally do not use/own a sepreate mic pre than the one built into my yamaha mixer. For a mic pre, it really depends on your budget, so if you could list that it'd help.

hmm I think there is one built in on my fostex anyway.

I was having the same problem in my amp so tried it with my dads XLR lead and it seemed alot louder, so its either louder on XLR or my lead is just ******.

Thanks for your time.
