Hey, i have been in a band for about a year and have decided id like to get into the recording side of things however i have no knowledge on the subject whatsoever. I was jsut wondering if anyone could help me out by pointing me in the right direction. I am looking to set up a small studio capable of recording my band of two guitars, bass, drums an two vocalists. Im have a budget of around $1500/2000 to get me started. I would prefer to be able to record all the tracks seperatly if possible.

Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,
Dan

Hey some more questions, if i were to buy a standalone recorder such as the tascam 2488 is it possible to mic an entire drumkit i.e. about 7 mic's record this then record guitar tracks bass and vocals all seperatly afterwards? Does anyone have any recordings done like this (dosent have to be on the same machine obviously) just so i can see what kind of quality it is possible to get.

There are units that can do that. From a quick scan of the product at service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear and yes, it will record up to 8 tracks at once.

So then, as long as your kit has 7 mics as you say, or even up to 8, you should be golden. Record those, then overdub all the other instruments. After all the overdubing and such is done, mixdown and burn to CD. This unit will connect to your PC via USB, or burn it in the built in CDRW, it has a MIDI wave table built in (just general MIDI tho), multieffects processor...actually, quite the cool unit based on what I am reading.

FYI MF has a pretty cool all-in-one package deal for under $2k that looks like a steal of a deal service.bfast.com/bfast/c...mp;bfmtype=gear

I was just wondering with something that only has two mic inputs how do u go about recording drums? is there any possible way to use more than 2 mics with a device like this?

If you buy an outboard mixer, than you can use multiple microphones and just send them all into the recording device with the main outputs.

Yet another question, what does the term 4in/4out mean in connection with USB interfaces.

it means there are 4 inputs and 4 outputs for tracking, same thing it means with any other audio device.
