Interesting Project. Any beat makers interested???

I have a friend who I'm working with on an interesting conceptual music project. I'm going to try and explain it here, and anyone who is interested should get at me.

First off, we're trying to put together a cd that will contain a bunch of beats (as many as possible). We're going to get 1,000 of these pressed up, and try and send them out around the world to mcs and other vocalists. Ideally, the mcs would then use the beats that are on the cd to make new songs. The mc's would retain full rights to these songs as long as they gave production credits to the beatmaker. However, we are hoping that in return for the beats, the mcs would get back at us with a copy of their song. Then once we have enough "quality" songs, the goal is to put out a compilation.

This is really supposed to be an art type project to see how different mcs from different cultures and backgrounds when given the same beats to work with, end up with different perceptions, and translate those into lyrics and different songs.

So what does the beat maker get out of this? Well, honestly, we can't pay any cash, but you will get some exposure. There will be 1000 cds pressed professionally and given out, and each beat maker will get production credits printed on the cd itself. There will also be a website where the beats can be downloaded and beatmakers will get full credit there. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to potentially have a whole bunch of mcs rhyme over your beats. And potentially you will have the chance to be featured on a compilation. You will get full production credit everywhere your beat goes!

I know this sounds complicated, and even difficult to pull off, but we're committed to making this happen. If you have any honest feedback on the project idea itself, that would be cool too. Any questions are also welcome. So, any takers?

It's a great idea, Coolo. It makes me wish that I had a sense of rhythm! "boom, crash, boom boom, crash" probably wouldn't help ya out much :-)

Tadpui, that's hilarious. After reading your post yesterday, I subconciously made a beat that has that basic drum pattern (well almost - mine is more boom boom crash, boom boom crash boom - where boom is kick and crash is clap). Anyways, glad you like the idea. I'll have more info for you guys as I pull this together. It's really a conceptual project of my friend who is a VERY good visual artist, but I'm helping him pull together all the music stuff (since that's what I do).

I'm interested.

I have some excellent beats, but I mainly record my drums live. However, I have some kickass "beats" that may interest you.

Ok good.

I asked him the same question I'm sure anyone would ask. I hope I didn't offend him in any way.

Sorry, I wasn't able to reply immediately, but I'm not in front of my computer 24 hours a day (I was actually off to my friends house to help him arrange a beat I made, as well as write a verse for one of his songs). I almost always am able to respond to emails within a day and a half though.

Chex, I assure you I was not offended, though the way you worded the question took me a bit off guard. In regards to your questions:

1) we are looking for hip hop instrumental tracks for people to rap over.

2) if you are concerned I might not use your beat as stated above (aka steal your beat and use it for myself), we can sign a contract, no problem. But the way you worded your question makes me want to reiterate that a large part of this project involves potentially a large number of mcs using your beat, including maybe even myself.

Renegade, sweet, I'd love to hear some stuff.

Dtwizz, I'm going to say that you can use samples, but don't make them super obvious or from super popular songs. I need to talk to a friend of mine about the technicalities of samples regarding this project, so I'll have more info for you later.

unfortunatly, i am @ my computer most of the day as I work a desk job...and sometimes I have too much time on my hands. Sorry if I sounded rude or pushy in any way. Thank you for e-mailing me back to check this discussion.

Thanks for answering my questions. When I meant "stealing my beats", I meant I just want credit for them...that is all, nothing more. But dB has assured me you're a trust worthy guy. I have a lot of respect for dB, as he deals with some of my silly topics and posts.

I am more than happy to be involved...if i'm still invited... =)

yeah, you're definitely still invited, and you have my word that you will get full production credit on anything that goes out that I have control over. Once it's on cd and mc/vocalists choose to use it, there is a chance that they won't give you credit (though it will say specifically on the cd that in order to use the beats they must give you credit). If any songs that use your beat make it to the compilation cd, you will also get full credit.

If my word isn't enough, like I said, it's not a problem to sign a contract.

nah, i trust you.

if anything, you should make the mc's sign an online contract that indicates they must note credit of the beat. It may not work, but some might have the respect to note it.

you have my e-mail. let me know when this all starts and i will start to create some beats.

So, it starts now!

Just playing, but seriously, we're trying to have all beats by April 23.

I was thinking of something like this, but I don't know how, to pull it off so that the mcs would even see it, since all the beats are on the cd. We'll have the beats on a webpage, so it's possible there, but...

I guess I could put an html file on the cd and make it autorun if you put the cd in a computer, but I'm pretty sure that increases the manufacturing cost, and I'm not really keen to doing that.

by April 23rd, alright thats cool. Gives me some time to fix them up and stuff.

How long should these samples be?

As for the contract thing...you should only making the beats accessable thru CD. Give them a TINY sample on the web (make it stream instead of downloadable). When they want the CD sent to them by mail, make them fill out a form before accepting their "order".

The beats should be arranged for a song format. Basically 12 or 16 bars for a verse and 8 bars is normal for a chorus. 3 verses is typical, but 2 or 4 is also acceptable. Feel free to arrange however you want to though; don't want to step on anyones toes creatively.

For the contract stuff, I'll bring this idea up to my friend and see what he thinks.

Alright

When we were talking about samples, I thought like a 20 or 30 second sample and redefine on their own LOL. So you want a full song with all the verses and chorus layed out...alright. Now it makes sense.

just an idea, y'all can pick tempos and just do say one or two drums (say hi-hats 'n snare) at a time, then have different layers from different ppl, might yeald some good results....feel sorry for who gets the snare though! lol

peace

Actually thats a good idea. Maybe when we send you a song, we can label the Tempo. Might makes things easier, for i.e. if you want to arrange the beats by Tempo instead of name or artist.

or use a standard loop like Acid or Cakewalk Grooveclips so the tempo can be adjusted accordingly.

of course. but i mean, if specific mc's are looking for a certain range in Tempo (i.e. 80-90) for something they have in mind, they can choose from a list where it's indicated rather than guessing.

um, well, I don't think it matters so much what the tempos are to the mc. Most write to a beat, so it involves using their ear rather than seeing what the tempo is.

Tempo is useful if people want to collaborate on a beat per WYD's suggestion, but honestly, it doesn't matter to me, so much, what the process is.

And yeah, I think it's best to assume that the mcs don't have the ability to extend a loop, though some invariably will. So, that's why I'm looking for full songs.

ha ha, renegade, I prefer the mixdown, but if you want some help, email me, and we can arrange to send the individual tracks, and I can do a mix for you.

Noize, I'd love to have you on the beat cd if you got the time to put something together. Remember, it's hip hop, it doesn't have to be super intricate. I'm sure you could bang something out in 2 hours. 45 minutes to compose. 10 minutes to arrange. 45 minutes to get a "decent" mix, and 15 minutes to admire.
