i'm picking up the m-audio buddy preamp tomorrow, have to get one for my condenser, i'm a bit peeved about paying for something that only seems to give power to my mic, can anyone put me out of my mysery and tell me what else a preamp is good for
thanks

Feb 22, 2005 07:48 pm having a dedicated outboard pre is accually really good for a condensor....the pre's on your zoom are somewhat "generic" meaning they're designed not to color the sound and just basically take a weak signal and make it hotter....an outboar pre usually has better circuitry that'll yeald a lower noizefloor and overall better signal to noize ratio, and as a bonus some pre's "color" the sound of the mic in a pleasing way (think tubes here)....i condider an outboard pre essential (but not necessary) for a good vocal track.

Feb 22, 2005 07:48 pm btw, sorry if this question sounds stupid but i've been working with my digital 8 track recorder for a while and never felt the need for a preamp, i'm new to computer recording

Feb 22, 2005 07:53 pm great thanks whosyourdaddy00, i feel better, i'm obsessive about good vocals, could it be used for guitar say preamp -> gt-6 effects -> computer, is there any point in that or will the gt-6 just drown out whatever the preamp does
Feb 22, 2005 10:50 pm ha. well for the longest time i just used the preamps in my mackie 1604. and i thought they sounded ok.
then one day i got a presonus tube pre for about $100 and it gave me a slightly warmer sound while recording.
just this week i ponied up $320 for the groove tubes brick preamp on clearance at GC. it made every mic sound 3x better than ever. every take i tracked tonite with it was the keeper. it made my oktava mc012 sound better than a mic costing 5x more thru my old preamp. let alone how much better the good mic sounded.
do i think it sucks that it was over 3 bills for a 1 channel preamp that is just a preamp not even a channel strip? yes. was it immidiately worth it as soon as i first heard the results? yes.
