my first bad day at the office

ok so i got the gear all borrowed and ready to track vox. the plan was to meet up at two and head out to the studio...well the band was beein' slack and we didn't end up leavin' 'till 3:30 (45 min drive to the studio)....i was a bit agitated b/c i knew it'd be awhile b4 we hit 'record'

so we roll out and we get there, everyone is psyched b/c we were gonna try to get two songs completely finished, so i can start workin' on a single, so we deck out the vocal booth with USA, Russian, Irish, and an Irish Military flag, put blankets up over the vocal booths windows so no one could see in (and to kill the early reflections from the windiow) got some good pics of pres. Bush and his brother Jeb makin' fools of themselves, a few other choice pics....my goal was to get the singer real comfortable and naked (in the psycological way) i wanted to squeeze everything he had outta him for these two songs (Lights, and My Nation)...

i get to work settin' up the pre amp and compressor (which took a bit longer than i expected, due to the gear i was unfimilliar with....sound check goes pretty well, so we run through a song to get warmed up (which i recorded too, just in case) well the singer quit smokin' **** and cigarettes about two weeks ago just for this album, and we get to the first scream part and his ******' voice has NO BALLS!! all the raspyness was gone! he couldn't sream the way he used to!!!! this is NOT acceptible, it sucked the life right outta the track, so we take a break to discuss.

well the band and the business partner of the studio owner (who has never seen us in action) get to fiddlin' with the tracks and someone somewhere made the damn 2480's faders not work, everything we were hearin' was pre fader, no matter what we tried we couldn't get 'em back!!! (i take a smoke break and pace back and fourth) i felt they knew their machine better than me, so let them fix it and i'll come back when it's workin.

two hours go by and nobody has any answers, the whole band was like WTF, i explained the thing and we just had to sit and wait

two more hours go by, now spirits are turning into anger, the band starts discussin' tracking vocals at another place, i said i'll do what ever they want, i could do them myself but we needed a place (that's quiet) and a good mic, that was my only requirement.

total of 6 hours in the studio and not one goddamn track has been recorded! the band leaves and i'm stuck there burnin' CD's of tracks to take home (cuz all i had was drum tracks) well we spend an hour on 2 cd's and get the hell outta there, no charge for any studio time though, so that was good.

the 2480 only plays 24 tracks at once and we have 26 tracks of music already recorded, the singer wanted to use two tracks so we could do verses in one run, then go back for choruses, this proved futile b/c the guyz couldn't get the machine to work! problems with routing inputs to tracks (which we've done many times b4)

so i get home, everyone was pissed and i load my 4 tracks into the computer, i was hoping to get the rythem guitar's distortion tracks (3 total) so i can work on blending them, well i only got the direct track and the condensor (NO ******* 57!!) and the condensor track sounds like ***, not sure if it was comb filtering from the glass in the vocal booth, or bad placement, or even jut that the mic dosn't work well with guitars, prolly a combination of all three. ****

so i get the tracks in and now i'm up to 19 tracks on my computer and my buffers need tweakin' well i tweek for 3 ******* HOURS to no good effect, i can't get my computer to play all these tracks (i'm startin' to think it might be my hard disk) well i also tried tweakin' the buffers in my Q-10 and i have no clue where they were when they were workin....AAAARRRRRRGGHHH!!!

SHUTDOWN

go to bed

that's getting a lot of 'bad happenings' out of the way right away. Next time'll go smooth as butter.

garr-on-tee.

I feel for ya WYD. Two of my first tracking sessions went similar, the band came by twice and left twice after a few attempts. it's certainly demoralizing.

I guess this could also be a good argument to record in a big pro studio. You can sit back and concentrate on the music while the techs take care of everything. Did they even try to call Roland for tech support? They do have a phone number.

Hey dB, Yeah to bad about the Hit Factory, but I heard they were very snotty and arrogant to artist that were'nt A list, so I don't feel to bad. I heard one artist say they were tracking and were booted out of their session because some star wanted to use the studio just to hang out and party with his posse. Very unprofessional for such a world class facility.

Yeah, I have heard stories like that as well.

Live by sword, die by the sword...reap what you sow, name your cliche'...they fit.

Big one up on the "pro's"...

The type of story ye expect to hear off with such places. Still, in teh words of Freddie...another one bites the dust.
