AIF import problems with VST

I downloaded some AIFs (16/44.1) a few days ago onto a PC, put them on disc to import them to VST on my mac but they won't import. iTunes'll play them just fine, but no joy with importing them or dropping them straight into the audio pool. Anyone have any suggestions or suggestions for conversion software so i can make them into wavs ...freeware'd be golden as i'm strapped right now, i guess if i need conversion software it'd be PC not mac as that's the machine we use for downloading. There's tons of these files (around 2.5 gig) so i'd rather not have to burn them as audio and toast them to the mac if i can help it.
