hello everyone,
when connecting the output of a MONO device (guitar/di box etc) with a 1/4" jack plug to the 1/8" stereo 'line in' of a sound card is the mono signal wired so as to be 'split' between the 2 stereo channels or is it just fed to 1 channel?
i've been told that there is a 1/4" mono to 1/8" stereo adaptor plug you can buy (i've tried everywhere) & also that by using an ordinary 1/8" mono adaptor it will 'short out' one of the sound cards channels & possibly do damage.
can anyone please enlighten me? - ramzoid.

I dunno about that particular adapter I don't recall seeing one but I am sure it's out there somewhere...however, even if split to two channels it'll still be a mono isgnal, why not just record it as mono and pan it center?

can you comment on the issue regarding plugging a 1/8" mono adaptor (for the 1/4" mono plug) into the stereo jack of the sound card.
this would 'dead short' a channel. i'm not knowledgeable enough to know if this would damage to the card?
i appreciate stereo to stereo & then panning but its the actual adaptor required for the 1/4" mono plug that has me puzzled.
if no damage is caused by using a mono adapator then the problem is solved.
thanks again - ramzoid.
