Outboard recorder&software bundle?

How are these outboard recorders w/multi tracks software like below? There are couple I looked at online below.
The digidesign comes with Pro tools SE. I have the cheapest of the cheap.....SB LIve and Power Tracks Pro now. I wanted to get more Plug-ins so rather pay that cost someone suggested just get entire new software.

I could get buy with 1 input and 2 would be convenient. I do mostly guitar and some vocals and all hobby stuff for fun, but I do a lot of it and records my output on CD.

Is the a site that compares and rates these bundled audio interface/software?

Is all the music played back through the unit too?
Is the Pro Tools SE a good multitrack recorder....and how about Power Tracks Plus?

Digidesign MBOX Music Production System /w pro tools SE $449
Lexicon Omega Desktop Recording Studio w/power tracks plus $349

Thank you for any suggestions.

I don't recommend getting into the ProTools world. The lexicon unit gets some great reviews, and PowerTracks Pro looks decent, I have heard a few people that use it and dig it. It is skinned exactly like Sonar, the functionality I don't know personally tho.

That;s just my personal opinion, cuz once you are locked in to ProTools, you are locked in. Their software only works with thier hardware, upgrades are expensive, they make you use their rather expensive plugins (though they might support VST now, I'm not sure).

It's just a lousy business model in my opinion. With other software you can choose the hardware you want to use and such like that...

Greetings...

Pro-Tools is expensive and restrictive. You cant use just any "plug ins" and must their specific plugs which, by definition are expensive.

The system is aimed at professionals but I personally see it as a big rip off. I never used it and never will and will never need to. I also know some "professionals" who also wont touch it due to cost and to be honest, its like a big name in the industry with good hardware/software - just not worth the cash.

Someone else jump in if I am off the mark. Its a bit like Caviare and Steak...both will feed ye when yer hungry but one is rediculously overpriced and certainly no better nutrionally yet has more "name appeal"... Pro-Tools is like that with say Steinberg (Cubase), Cakewalk (Sonar), etc etc.

Hope this helps...mainly cost and accessibility.

Good luck to ye

Coco.

very nice help...thanks! I definately dont want to buy something I cant afford to upgrade.

So what do you recommend for a DAW desktop with package multitrack recording software and allows use of 3rd party (cheap) plug-in?

That Presonus Firebox is being advertised all over now and says it has Steinberg's Cubase LE 48-track for $400.
E-mu(Creative labs?) has that 1212 which looks nice for all the patching capability but doesnt look like it has software and keeps talking about sampling so maybe its not really meant for multitrack recording.

Its all to complicated! maybe I should stick with my Soundblaster 16bit until someday it all sinks in.

thanks!

Steinberg Cubase allows VST (and I think DirectX) plugins, which there are many available, even many for free.

I prefer SOnar for recording myself, which also supports VST and DX third party plugs.

proTools is really the only app that is that restrictive. Some of the real inexpensive app won't support any plugins, but most support at least one format, often times both. Just check the specs of the app. What you are looking for is DirectX and VST plugin compatiblity.

they need to just settle on one universal plugin format...it'd be like MIDI all over again.
